Support Sudanese Refugees in Egypt

Support Sudanese Refugees in Egypt

From Azhar Omer Ahmed

I’m fundraising for Sudanese war refugees in Cairo. They need assistance for food, rent, medical care, and educational expenses for children (school fees, uniforms, school supplies.) Every dollar helps.

More Info

My family members are among the 310,000 Sudanese refugees who have fled the terrible civil war in Sudan and risked their lives to get to Cairo. My sister-in-law and her children arrived malnourished and injured. They waited all night in line outside the UNHCR in Cairo, only to be given appointments for several weeks away, to begin the asylum application process. We are lucky that we have family members in Egypt who took them in to their apartment and who are providing for their basic needs. But I want to help those who are not so lucky, by raising funds for a Sudanese community group I know, the Association of the Sons of Otoro, who are helping Sudanese newcomers in Cairo, especially with food and school for children.

New arrivals from Sudan do not have access to assistance from the UN and other major refugee-serving organizations in Egypt until they register with the UNHRC and have an asylum application appointment. Many who are fleeing the current war cannot even get an appointment with UNHCR, and those who do have to wait for a month or more. This leaves hundreds of women, men, & children living in temporary shelters and overcrowded apartments, without medical care or resources for school. Only family members and grassroots community-based groups like the Association of the Sons of Otoro, are helping them. We hope you will our support circle.
