Yoga Punx PDX Support Fund

From Sandee Lawless

Yoga Punx PDX is seeking support from our community to save our club house so we continue to offer the transformational healing of Yoga to those who otherwise could not access due to physical and financial barriers.

More Info

Our founder, Sandee Simon-Lawless, has experienced first-hand the healing transformation of a yoga practice. Sandee is a survivor of abuse, domestic violence, and the crippling effects of drug addiction as a coping mechanism from past trauma.  It was not until she found this practice was she able to heal from these deep wounds, and become a community leader. She founded Yoga Punx PDX to bring yoga to the people, for the people, and helping the wounded rise up and heal personally and collectively as a community.

Yoga today, sadly is primarily offered to those with privilege and means to access the modern studio, leaving the most vulnerable and marginal populations without access to this deeply healing modality.

We see ourselves as currently playing both a direct service and creating social change.  Yoga is a path towards liberating all people, but to ensure all are liberated, we focus on those who need it the most.

We have strong connections with our students and sangha (community). As we grow and create policy, we reach out to our sangha and listen to their experiences. Through their wisdom we improve our approach to both providing yoga instruction and creating a radically inclusive space(s) for marginalized people to feel welcome, seen, and to see themselves reflected back within community.

What will our funds be used for?

Your generous donations will allow us to continue to offer our community center for donation- based classes, no one is every turned away,  as well as a  center, an urban refuge,  for various groups to have safe place for healing and recovery.  Our community center currently offers space to AA, NA, Dharma Recovery, Rose City Rebel Dhamma and more.

Additionally, this fund will provide a means for us to continue to offer classes to those who cannot access classes at drug/alcohol treatment centers, nursing homes and beyond.  Since our founding we have offered classes in those venues as well as needle exchanges, for our houseless friends and recently for newly immigrated through a program with DHS.  Pre-Covid, we were expanding to St. Johns, North Portland, South East Portland and were getting ready to launch in Gresham.  Currently we are offering our classes by donation via LIVESTREAM until we can meet again in groups.

We thank you our community, our supporters for helping us through this time.   We know now, more then ever, this is needed --to help our community heal from this collective trauma and have tools to process. No donation is ever too small.  If you have been touched by us, or know someone who has, or are maybe moved by our mission--- please help us help others, by sharing this campaign so we can reach this transformative goal that will ensure our future.

Rise up Warriors, RISE UP.

In Peace,

The Yoga Punx PDX Board.
