Wheelchair for Raevun

Wheelchair for Raevun

From Jessica Iler

I'm raising funds for an accessible power wheelchair for my friend, Raevun. This wheelchair gives him 'legs' to enjoy the outdoors, get together with friends, live a life outside the walls of his apartment.

Raevun is a good friend who has been quite limited in his ability to go places, do things outside of his home since the amputation of both his legs years ago.

The power chair provided by insurance gives him independence in his home but it isn’t portable at all, and has very little range so a trip to the grocery store is about the limit of his range. His manual chair is large and heavy, and won’t fit in a car trunk or even the back of my suv, and he isn’t capable of propelling himself in a manual chair so we’re dependent on the limits of my strength to load, unload, and push his chair. It's also not possible to take the manual chair when the backseat is full of kids, since it won't fit in the back without the seats down.

So I’ve been searching for a power chair that would give him more independence outside his home, so he can go to gaming events, the beach, accessible trails, and maybe even fly somewhere and stay in motels if he wants.

He’s not a small guy, and most power chairs and manual chairs aren’t designed for folks like him. He accepted years ago that the loss of his legs meant he couldn’t do many of the things he enjoyed anymore.

I found a chair for him! It was designed for larger wheelchair users, and includes the features that he needs to be able to use it. This chair folds down to a compact size so it fits into a Prius car trunk, it folds down and up easily and quickly, it’s designed for “all terrain” so he won’t be limited to only paved areas, it meets airline specs, and so on.

The chair costs $2818.83 - I bought the chair so he could try it out, make sure it’s a good fit, and now need to raise funds so he can keep the chair and the independence it provides.
