Update #16

Week 1 of rehab at Ability KC is under wraps! Emma has done phenomenal! Today she was able to walk 56 ft twice...with the help of her AFOs and walker of course but still amazing! She has also been learning to cook in occupational therapy. No matter what she is doing or learning, she continues to WOW her therapists and family with the progress she is making! Keep going Emma!

More Info

On April 4, 2021 Emma Blain was in a tragic car accident.  She suffered a lumbar spine fracture and it’s too soon to know how severe the damage is. Emma faces a long recovery and it may take a year to find out if she will be able to walk again. Emma is just 16 and was a competitive dancer.  She may never competitively dance again but together we can help her get on her feet through extensive rehab.  There will be insurmountable medical bills and challenges along this  journey. Let’s get to the goal and help Emma succeed!

Update #15

Therapy officially starts next week at Ability KC! Emma had a full day of evaluation earlier this week and the team at Ability KC has plan in place. Emma will be in an intense therapy program until mid August. She is determined to make the most of this! Yesterday she went to the dentist to get her temporary veneer on her broken tooth. We can't wait to have her smile for all her pictures!

Update #14

Well, she did it! Emma made it home! With the use of her walker and and AFOs she was able to walk outta that place! She got home to family and a few friends and Tucker got to come home as well! She is looking forward to therapy starting next week and finding out how the intense outpatient therapy there will increase her mobility. We can't either! The Ability KC she will go to is the Children's Campus. I'm posting a link in case you want to read about it and the services Emma and her family have access to. It's pretty amazing!

Update #13

Emma is coming home today! She and Jen spent their last night in their hospital beds. They look forward to coming home and starting a new set of challenges. Next week Emma will start her outpatient therapy at Ability KC... the time off from therapy is a chance for Emma to get used to home life and can help her see any challenges she wouldn't see until she got into actual home life.. It won't create a set back and will give some mental respite too. Another update coming tonight...

Update #12

Emma is starting to use the pool for PT more. She is also starting to use a walker for transfers. Everyday she is getting a little bit stronger and taking a few more steps towards getting home. Later this week a sidewalk and ramp will be laid at home. All of this is being done by donation from some awesome companies and volunteers. We will update you on that progress and make sure to recognize all of them later. Thanks for your continued support.

Update #11

Emma's incisions are healed nicely and she finally got pool time! She continues to work hard in PT and with her AFOs she is practicing standing and taking steps which is difficult because she doesn't have feeling in her lower legs and feet. She is working towards discharge and practicing transfers in and out of vehicles. One step closer to home!

Update #9

Emma's had a busy but successful week in PT! She even had a surprise visitor courtesy of Molly, who has been keeping on eye on Tucker. Emma continues to work on her upper body strength and has used the exercise bike without the e stim machine! She also got fitted for her AFO (Ankle/Foot Orthosis) which are like braces for her ankles and feet that will help her walk and keep her feet from dragging. She will get those early next week! She is in good spirits with a strong determination to be successful! Emma's family is so thankful for everything you all have done...even just keeping up with her progress. We appreciate all the love, support and prayers!

Update #8

Emma has had a busy week of trying out different types of harnesses to help her body remember how to take steps and put weight on her legs. As you can see, its not easy. She has been working very hard all day to get her strength built back up. Some days are better than others but she maintains a positive attitude and looks forward to her naps in between PT sessions. Emma is known to ask her therapists "what's next?" as she is ready to keep fighting to walk again.

Update #6

It been a couple of days since the last update but Emma's been busy! I will post a few pictures on the site. You may need to go directly to the site to see all the photos.
Emma has been working on upper body strength this week. She's also been in a harness and tilt table for weight bearing. The harness is pretty cool because she can actually take some steps in it! She continues to use the e-stim machine to wake up those sleepy muscles!
We completed the first round of t shirt sales and did fantastic! Thanks to everyone for the support!

Update #5

Today was Emma's first full day in rehab... many hours of working on rebuilding muscles and working up a sweat! She sat up on her own today...awesome abs! Last night she began to feel some tingling in her lower legs and feet! Amazing things are happening and we are so blessed with every miracle! Lots has happened in 2 weeks but we still have a long way to go. Thanks to all of you who have supported us so far. Please continue to share our story!

Update #4

It was a busy day for Emma! She took her first shower since arriving at Children's Mercy! And she did a remarkable thing...lifted both her legs while sitting upright in the gym. I'll try to figure out how to post the video later! After dinner, Emma finally makes the move to the rehab unit at Children's. Bittersweet because she will miss the things she feels comfortable with...her nurses, her routine, her room. But it's time to move on to the next chapter! Thumbs up, Emma!

Update #3

Emma had a tough day yesterday. She worked on learning to sit up again. I'm posting a picture of that. After her PT in the gym, she told her friend Haley that she had this sudden urge to move. And then she did!
She was able to lay frog-legged and open and close her legs a few times!
Go Emma!! She also got a visit from the emotional support dog at Children's Mercy Hospital. What a blessing that we have such a great hospital in this city! In the next day or 2 Emma will be graduating to rehab!!! We will keep you posted...

Update #1

Emma had another surgery on her left knee today to close the gaping wound from the accident. They were finally able to close it! She now has feeling from thigh to mid shin but still can’t really do much movement. It’s gonna take a lot of time and patience.

We kicked off the t shirt sales from the dance studio. Right now just selling them to the labor and delivery units and dance studio.
