The Voices of Flint Youth Chorus is dedicated to educating, empowering and encouraging young people by providing a community that fosters creativity, individuality, and opportunities for growth through the art of music.
The Voices of Flint Youth Chorus summer program is a music education and choral intensive for current 3rd-5th grade students attending Flint public elementary schools. For the summer of 2020, students will be exposed to a variety of music from many different genres and cultures, while also honing the basic skills necessary as outlined in the National Music Standards.
The participating students’ days during the summer program will include time learning music performance and appreciation, as well as time for them to create and compose their own music, and receive movement classes. There will also be time set aside during the program hours for students to receive one-on-one tutoring, to prepare them for the upcoming school year.
At the end of the two-week program, the students will put on a mini-concert (approximately 30 minutes) showcasing what they have learned over the past two weeks. Parents/ guardians, friends, board members, and those who have aided in funding by way of donations/gifts/grants/ or use of facilities will be invited to attend.
While programs similar to this exist in the Flint area, they often require a tuition which lessens the possibility of participation from students in low socio-economic areas. Making this program tuition free to the students, opens up a pathway to music that had not previously existed before.
