As you envision a brighter future for our world in the coming year, you can help others find hope and peace in the midst of terminal illness by supporting the Shepherd's Cove Charity Care program.
"When I think of how my heart would still sting if Mom's death had ended as it began - in confusion and desperation - compared with Shepherd's Cove, I'm afraid to think how cold I'd feel about life. Thank you from the bottom and the top and every other corner of my heart." - James M.
During a seemingly hopeless situation, James and his family found solace under the care of Shepherd's Cove. For one "nightmare week" after the cancer diagnosis, James tried to provide his mother with what he called "homemade hospice care" for his mother in her tiny mobile home in a rural area. He had few supplies, little help, and no knowledge of the dying process.
After another visit to the hospital, the family finally decided to seek refuge in the Shepherd's Cove inpatient unit (IPU). The family's burdens were lifted almost immediately. Although they had limited financial means, they were treated as royalty and found peace and dignity in the midst of their storm.
"She was able to spend her last days in more luxury than she'd ever known for a day in her life, and out of pain," James wrote in a letter after his mother's death. "All I can say is that I can never say enough. I owe you an enormous debt. It was as close to perfect as any human endeavor I've seen. ... And to come to all of that empty-handed, unable to pay a dime, and be told to just forget about it, I just don't know what to say.
"Shepherd's Cove was our miracle."
The miracle James and his mother experienced during this crucial time was only possible because generous community members like you cared enough to give to the SCH Charity Care program. Today, you can provide that same miracle for others facing the realities of terminal illness. Shepherd's Cove provides an average of $1,000 per day in non-reimbursed or under-reimbursed care. We have never turned anyone in need of hospice care away for inability to pay, but this is not possible without your support.
So far this year, our community has given peace, comfort, and dignity to twenty-eight hospice patients and their families through the Charity Care program. We need your help to continue this mission and ensure no one has to face the end of life without the hope of hospice. Thank you for considering how you can give hope today. No matter how big or small, we appreciate every dollar given to help hurting families.
