Hello friends, family, and potential patrons!

I'm happy to announce that, after working in public education for the last three years,  I will be teaching 8th grade mathematics for Noble High School this fall.

This is a pivotal time in public education. Normalcy is no more, and the way educational content is delivered needs to be redesigned. Schools exist to prepare students with the skills they need to engage fruitfully with their local and global communities. We are in the business of equipping our students with the knowledge, problem-solving skills, and perspectives that will help them be successful in their individual passions and professional goals.

We are also meant to foster an environment where learning happens by structuring our classes to be a place where students can struggle safely and productively. Teachers are guides to help students realize the results of their own hard work and come to a great understanding of their individual potential. While a virtual classroom offers a new way to approach content, the disconnect between student and teacher has never been wider.

I believe that it’s still possible to achieve our goals in education to reach every student. We are at a critical moment in a lot of student’s lives where we have the potential to support them with a highly differential and personalized program. We have to be flexible to see the needs of every student and support them exactly where they are at on an individual basis. I don’t think it’s enough to reach only the average student. Educators must be vigilant to make sure no student is disappearing from view due to the physical disconnection. We can not ignore those learners who need extra attention to succeed, nor can we let those who are ready to be challenged at a higher level fall through the cracks.

While I feel up for this challenge, I know it will not necessarily be easy. I feel well supported by my teaching team, school administration, and find myself among a great community. At the end of the day, there are a lot of technologies and practices that can support the crafting of a new and effective educational practice. What is prohibitive is the cost of licensing the specific technologies that exist and have the potential to be a game changer in these chaotic times.

Being flexible is key to success. While I’m feeling ready to pivot my practice on a moment’s notice, your financial support will allow me to be able to invest in resources, programs, and practices that can support students immediately as needs arise, as well as inform future practice for myself and other educators. Remember, this moment will carry forward in a student’s life for years to come. Your backing today may make a lasting difference that will reverberate positively throughout a student’s whole life.

Thank you for your support of my practice and the well being of the next generation,

Matt Hosmer
