More Info

The Veteran's Newspaper is a quarterly newspaper published by the Unsung Heroes Living History Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that collects and preserves stories of African American veterans and their families. that includes stories and provides resource information targeting all veterans of all military branches. Many veterans return home without knowledge of the available resources they are eligible for. This includes how to obtain benefits, resources, and pensions. The Veterans Newspaper serves as a resource guide for those veterans who need assistance in various areas. Just a $1.00 donation for each paper benefits local veteran’s organizations and small nonprofit organizations who are serving the Central Valley communities daily. UHLHP is spearheaded by Lisa Daniels, who after discovering her grandmother was a civilian “Riveter” in the Brooklyn Shipyards during World War II, wanted to learn more about people of color who contributed to the military effort in the World Wars.  Saddened by the limited information provided by mainstream anthologies and school textbooks, Daniels wanted to ensure the legacy of the African-American veteran would not be forgotten.  The book project became an oral history project that celebrated one decade of storytelling and collection in 2015.

UHLHP is an exciting intergenerational program that teaches young people valuable 21 century job skills and the importance of community service, volunteerism and civic engagement.  Working with adult mentors, youth producers interview veterans, then use computers to combine the veteran’s words with images and music, creating short “digital stories” that are shared with schools, libraries and museums.  Unsung Heroes Living History Project is a 501 ©3 non-profit charitable organization.
