We're up to 26 donors! We've also received checks from a few people, so we have now raised $2,180. Thanks to all of you who have donated and please continue to share with others. Even $10 can help us get four brand new books.

Last month alone, we distributed over 350 books to children in our Book of the Month Club. Another 100 are going out to Kern Medical for new parents. We've heard a lot of great feedback from people who are grateful for programs like these. Here's something recent from a happy mother.

"My name is Mariela. My daughter is Avery and she is 1and a half years old. We wanted to thank you for all the books she has received. She loves every single one. I have always read to her since she was in my belly. Coming from a one income household it can be pretty hard to come by some pretty reasonable priced books since most are expensive for us. So this program has been able to help her little library grow. She LOVES to "read" and have us read books to her. She rather have a book over a toy. Thank you so much!"

Day of Action is United Way's worldwide celebration of volunteerism and advocacy. We're asking you to join us this year by supporting Kern's newest readers and contributing to our New Book Fund. The book drive will run through June 21, which is Day of Action.

Here in Kern, United Way strives to strengthen our community's capacity to support its most vulnerable families. We help new parents take on the role of their child's first teacher by getting new or gently used books into homes, connecting them with their local library, and providing them with the tools they need to foster in their children a life-long love of reading.

Each year, we distribute over 5,000 new books to children through the Book of the Month Club, New Parent Toolkits, Home Libraries, Born Learning Trail field trips, and Raising a Reader program special events.

Research shows us that a love for reading begins in the home. That special bond starts at birth -- and even before! -- making it a vital time for parents to access tools that support early learning, since we know that by the age of three, the brain is already 80% developed. We help parents turn everyday moments into learning opportunities, and model a love of reading to their kids even before they've actually learned the words on the page. We know that an early love of books in the home leads to greater academic success down the road.

Our kids will be better equipped to read at grade level, to graduate from high school and college, and enter the workplace.
