Tyler had an OUTSTANDING day of therapy! :) the therapists had colored shapes and asked Tyler to match the shapes and colors--and Tyler did it! (Matched a yellow star with a yellow star, etc.) They also had Tyler standing up again! He pushed with his legs and moved his legs in and out on command! The speech therapist had Tyler brush his teeth again. She also gave him a lemon swab and he swallowed! So slowly but surely he is getting that function back! Hopefully he will be eating real food before we know it! (Texas Neuro better have plenty of food for this patient!)

His arm is doing better today--not quite as bent and tight. Not sure about how his blood pressure is doing because they have not taken it yet. We are thinking the blood pressure is high because he is in pain from his arm! :(

Can't thank you guys enough for the continued prayers! They are extremely powerful! Please keep them coming. Tyler is incredibly strong and so amazing. Thank you for the continued support! Love you guys! - Leah Handrick

On September 14th, Tyler Handrick, was skateboarding with a friend when he fell and hit his head.  Tyler was rushed to the hospital and put in a medically induced coma where his progress has been slow but Tyler continues to fight. As we continue to pray for Tyler's healing, we ask that everyone show their love and support by donating to help with Tyler's medical expenses.

Anything helps, thank you!

30 Days - Oct. 14, 2013 @ 1:00

Can you guys believe it has been 30 days since the accident? We can't believe it. Tyler has made such a turn around! :)

Tyler was very active this morning--pushing the end of the bed with his feet and moving his arms. More movement in his legs than usual which is good. The neurologist came to visit him this morning and was very impressed with his progress!

At therapy this morning he did an awesome job moving his head left to right and moving it up and down as well! He is having some trouble with his right arm. He is keeping it bent to his chest, his muscle is very flexed and tight. The doctors aren't worried, they said this can happen with a brain injury. They are going to inject him with medication soon to help relax the muscles in his arm. Pray that he starts to relax that right arm and get range of motion back.

We have been working on swallowing and he gets better with it each day. I think he is starting to understand that once he swallows, he can get food! :)

Please, please, please continue to pray for Tyler! He needs them! He is working very hard each day and we pray that continues! Love you guys! - Leah Handrick

Trache-off-of-me! - October 7, 2013 @ 12pm

The trach is out folks! :) they took it out this morning and Tyler is doing fantastic! He keeps grabbing for it still but nothing is there but a small bandage!

He did awesome at therapy today! The speech therapist gave Tyler the toothbrush and asked him to brush his teeth and Tyler put the toothbrush in his mouth!

He was able to hold his head up a little bit with the physical and occupational therapists this morning as well which is a first!

His right eye is open real big today but he still isn't awake fully. Still touching and itching his face a lot! Trying to take off his helmet as well!

Visitors are welcome! The weekend is usually the best because he doesn't have any therapy and this place is way in south Austin! Visiting hours are from 4-9 weekdays and 12-9 on weekends. Please let us know if you want to come see him.

Continue to pray and pray some more because they are working! :) love you guys! -Leah Handrick

Slow and Steady - 10/15/2013 @ 1pm

Hey guys! Not a whole lot to update on.. They said his progress will be slow. He is improving each day, we just can't see it. So my updates will start to be every other day!

He is still moving and itching his face and touching his face a lot. He has been trying to grab his trach more which is good and bad. So we have to put a mitten on his hand sometimes so he doesn't hurt himself.

His trach is still capped so they will remove the trach Monday or Tuesday! I took him outside today once the nurses got him in his chair. I'm sure that felt wonderful for him. He loves to be outside!

They started him on adderall twice a day to try and wake him up. We will see how that goes. His eyes are definitely more open and it seems like he is trying to become more aware of himself (touching his shirt, face, etc).

Please continue to pray for Tyler and a full recovery! He is such a strong and amazing young man! -lean Handrick

Up and at em'! - 10/2/2013 @ Noon

The therapist got Tyler in a chair this morning! He is still not awake but it is so good to get him out of bed! Once he was in the chair, they took him to the gym and got him in strapped into a bed that angled him to about 50 degrees upright which he really liked! I'm sure it felt good for his body to be upright instead of laying flat!

Still doing some commands when he is a little more awake but all the therapy has been taking it out of him!

He is still off of the ventilator and they put a tube in his trach to make the hole smaller and he's doing really well with it. The next step is to cap the trach and then eventually remove it all together! He's been having really big coughs which is awesome!

Keep praying guys! They are working!!! :) love you! - Leah Handrick

Hello from Texas Neuro - October 1, 2013 @ 11am

This place is awesome! They are going to be working with Tyler constantly!

He has still woken up completely. He did give the neurologist a thumbs up this morning when asked! They are first going to ween him off the ventilator. Right now he is off the vent! And doing well :)

Visitors will be welcome but they want to give him some time to get adjusted to his new place! We will keep you guys posted!

Continued prayers for my brothers recovery. He needs them so much! Love you guys! - Leah Handrick

Baby Steps - September 30, 2013 @ 11am

Hello everyone! Well they started weening Tyler off the ventilator yesterday and he has been doing awesome! Breathing with very little help all on his own like a champ! :)

He has been opening his eyes more and opening his mouth more today. His tickleishness (yes, that's a word) is back! They cut the rest of his hair off yesterday so he is back to his buzz cut! Still moving those arms and legs on occasion and moving his shoulders.

Hopefully moving to Texas Neuro tomorrow! Just waiting on insurance.

Continue to pray for my amazing brother. We have seen how powerful the prayers can be and we need them to continue! He is fighting. Love you guys! - Leah Handrick

Another Day - September 29, 2013 @ 10am

Hey guys. Not a whole lot to update you on today. Tyler is ready to go to Texas Neuro from the medical standpoint but there is some background work that has to be done. Could be tomorrow or Tuesday. Just depends.

They are going to try and start weening him off the ventilator today. Still moving his arms, legs and shoulders on occasion and blinking. Still has a slight fever but that is caused from his brain injury.

May cut the rest of his hair off today! We will see.

Continue to pray for Tyler! He has a long road ahead. - Lean Handrick

Movin' and Grovin' - September 28, 2013 @ 9:44am

Well Tyler is completely off any sedation medication and today they will start weening him off of the pain meds. Of course all the medication is still floating around in his body so he is still medicated. But he has been moving all appendages!

He squeezed my mom's hand on command yesterday, squeezed the nurses hand on command a few times last night and when tickled or pinched would move his arm or leg. Of course, this is when Tyler feels like cooperating! Sometimes he just lays there and doesn't listen :)

His left side seems to be more responsive than his right for now. That could change once the medication is out of his system. But the doctor said his brain may need to figure out new paths to take to make things move the way he wants--just depends on the damage to his brain.

He has been blinking a lot. His pupils are dilating but right now they are very large but the doctor said that is normal with the medication. He has also been yawning which is pretty cute :)

Continue to pray for patience, strength and healing for my brother as he starts his road to recovery! He is such an amazing young man! Love you guys! - Leah Handrick

Wakey Wakey - September 27, 2013 @ 10am

Good morning guys! The doctor came in and said they are going to start lowering my brother's medication and start to see what he can do. Pray that he can do even more than we hope for!

They said he could be super agitated at first but that's because of the medication (he's been sedated for nearly two weeks). His vitals and everything look great though!

He did move his finger on command yesterday and attempted to punch a nurse last night. He's very stubborn (shocking, I know) on following commands. Seems right now he just wants to be left alone!

They are going to be moving Tyler to Texas Neuro in south Austin as early as next week. Just depends on how he does over the next few days. Not sure about visitors today because the doctor said he may be very combative after coming off all the medication. I will definitely keep you guys posted on visitation and when he will be moved from the hospital.

Continue to pray for my brothers strength, patience and a smooth healing. - Leah Handrick

Tracheostomy is done! -September 26, 2013 @ 3pm

The nurses said "the surgery went beautifully!" Woohoo! Tyler is a rockstar! No more uncomfortable tubes! They fitted Tyler for his helmet yesterday so we will get it today or tomorrow. Once he has his helmet, they will start reducing sedation and see what all this boy can do! The helmet is just for protection so he doesn't hurt his poor little brain where the skull is still missing.

Keep praying you guys! Love you all! - Leah Handrick

Another day - September 25, 2013 @ 1:00pm

Well it looks like they are going to do the surgery tomorrow. He was running a fever again this morning of 102.5. They have him back on the cooling blankets and Tylenol. We need his fever to stay down today and overnight so they can perform the surgery.

He has been blinking today and is definitely more aware of people in the room. His cultures came back negative so his fever is just due to his head injury which is not uncommon. He was reacting last night but they put him back on his pain meds so he is in dream land again.

Unfortunately still no visitors because of the fever and the fact that Tyler is aware of people in the room and the doctors don't want him to be stimulated by people.

Please continue to pray for my amazing brother. We have a long road ahead but he will be worth every mile.

Time to remove the drain - September 24, 2013

Well guys, just talked to the neurologist and he is removing the drain from his skull as we speak! His pressure has remained in the low teens with no medication so he wants to get it out. Once the drain is out they will start to lower the sedation and see what Tyler can do.

Please pray, pray and pray some more that his pressure stays low and that we have positive signs and a wonderful healing. I can't ask enough for these prayers.

Thank you guys. We love you!

Decision Day - September 23, 2013

Decision Day
Written September 23, 2013 9:23pm by Leah Handrick

As most of you may already know we decided to go ahead with the tracheostomy. His surgery is scheduled for tomorrow at 1. The trache is better for Tyler than the ventilator because it will get all the tubes out of his mouth and allow him to close his mouth to keep from infections.

He was running a fever this morning of 103.7. As of now, it is down to 99.1. He is still coughing and having responsive movements. Also he is still breathing over the ventilator.

Please continue to keep my sweet and amazing brother in your thoughts and prayers. More updates to come.
