8 Graduate Students! ONE Week! Pittsburgh - PA! 2400 miles of Travel with the Purpose to Help Others! Matelot - Trinidad! Development!...And we need your HELP!
In March of 2014, 8 Graduate Students - Shannon, Caitlin, Andrew, Camille, Ellie, Justin, Tosh & Jemima - from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) at the University of Pittsburgh, in partnership with Amizade Global Service Learning and the International Development Studies Association (IDSA) of GSPIA, will be heading to Matelot, Trinidad for one week. There we will collaborate with the DORCAS Women's Group, who are working tirelessly to aid their community, to execute various projects. This is an opportunity for us to utilize the skills gained from previous experiences and courses at GSPIA to create workshops and plans with the DORCAS Women's Group, to have an impact on the town of Matelot and its people.
DORCAS Women's Group, established in 2008, focuses on revitalizing Matelot, a community that has yet to receive assistance from the government. We will be hosting workshops in areas such as: grant writing, project management, project evaluation. The projects that will be developed by IDSA will be in addition to the ideas and work that has been done by the DORCAS. Eco-tourism, agricultural infrastructure, revitalization of the community infrastructure are some of the main elements of the development of the community that we will center the projects around. We intend to learn from the people of Matelot, incorporating their needs and ideas, so as to help create a foundation for the various plans that the DORCAS Women's Group and the community are able to build upon in the future.
