Update #8

Hi, All!

Thanks so much for supporting and donating to our campaign!

We had a great race yesterday, finishing 29th out of 50 in our Co-ed Relay division. You can check out all the race results at http://www.nyctri.com/new-york/results/
In brief, Steph kicked butt in the swim, despite being overly anxious before the race; Adam cruised up and down the West Side Highway with pure grit and determination, despite never having ridden more than 15 miles on a bike in his life; and I attacked the Central Park hills when my legs complied.

Our support was more than impressive on race day. We can all thank Krista and James Salantiri for the wonderful assortment and layout of our photos that you can see here (make sure to scroll down): http://bit.ly/nyctricompilation

More importantly we raised over $2,000 in supporting the Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation in memory of Mike Connolly. He was a friend to all of us, a son to a select few, a brother to one and a cousin and nephew to many. I know there's a common thread that connects us all together when we think about Mike. We all feel the same sense of loss. Some miss his sense of humor, others his infectious smile. But there's one thing that has lived on, and will continue to live on beyond any of our days on this planet. It's the one thing that compelled me to do this race in memory of Mike -- his generous heart. And it's still giving...

We miss you, MIKE!

More Info

Mike left us all too soon. Too soon for me to tell him to pick me up for a round of golf (he was always late); too soon for him to ask his lovely girlfriend, Krista, to marry him; and way too soon for his family and friends to say goodbye.

On August 3rd, 2014, the second anniversary of his passing, I will be participating in The New York City Triathlon. I’ve entered the lottery for this event almost every year that they’ve had it, but I’ve never gotten in… until this year.

Given the significance of this date, the luck of being selected from the lottery (perhaps it’s fate), and the friendship with Mike I still hold dear to my heart, I feel compelled to do something. So in remembrance of Mike, I’m raising money for the Children’s Cardiomyopathy Foundation, a national, non-profit organization focused on pediatric cardiomyopathy. Mike was diagnosed with this chronic disease of the heart in his adolescence, and lost to it on August 3rd, 2012 while surfing in the Atlantic Ocean in Long Beach, NY.

I know most of Mike’s friends and family will have a heavy heart this day, like most days, but I won’t. Every stroke, pedal and step I take will be inspired by our friendship, and the battle that children and young adults like Mike face to live a long and prosperous life.

Injury Update + Some Awesome New Teammates + Spectator Guide

We crushed the campaign goal -- we're pretty close to doubling it. Thank you all so much. Let's see if we can get to $2,000! All for a great cause in Mike's memory.

Regarding my injured left elbow, it's fractured, so unfortunately I won't be able to do the race alone. But... I recruited two awesome teammates to help turn this race into a RELAY! Stephanie Keilty, who will be doing the swim portion, and Adam Warstadt, who will be cruising on the bike portion.

Anyone who's interested in coming to check out the race to support Team "Tri-Ing for Mike," click on this link to the spectator guide: http://bit.ly/nyctrispectatorguide

Lastly, help spread the word! Check it out: http://fundly.com/tri-ing-for-mike

Yours in tri-ing,

- Leif
