I am asking for pledges so that I can start printing my own mugs!!! This will create many opportunities for me, such as collaborating with local shops to carry my mugs, local business owners for orders & craft fairs!

Hello everybody! My name is Tresa Strohkirch! If you’re here because you know me personally, then you’ve probably heard me talk about how I’ve been wanting to invest in a heat press for sublimating my own Mom Life Mugs for quite some time. During this crazy and uncertain time in our world, I’ve realized now more than ever, I need to be printing my own mugs instead of outsourcing that part of my business.
Mom Life Mugs started for me in 2019 when I was looking for a way be at home more with my son. He suffered a drastic speech and behavioral regression, and was spending 10 hours a day in daycare and I was unable to get him the care that he needed.
Shortly after, I left my corporate job and become a full-time solo-mompreneur and the Mom Life Mugs brand was born! As a way to start up easily and without a huge investment upfront, I outsourced the printing of my mugs so that I could get started right away, but doing this has held me back from taking advantage of so many opportunities. Anytime someone local wants a mug, I cannot just print it for them and provide that fast and convenient service, which has always been part of who I am as a business owner.
The company I go through to print my mugs has been working at a severely reduced capacity and with the influx of businesses taking their business online, they’re also experiencing a huge surge in orders. They don’t expect to start printing any of my new mug orders any sooner than 3-4 weeks (and that’s in business days), which not only makes me cringe as a consumer, it makes me cringe as a business owner!
Originally, the delay was going to be 7-10 business days, but it’s just getting worse. I’ve had to issue refunds and I am on the verge of possibly having to issue several more if these orders are not filled in a timely manner. This service no longer aligns with my personal business practices and beliefs; I always aim for fast and efficient service, and I know that I personally can provide my customers with better service if I am printing my mugs myself.
The total cost to invest in a mug press and all the supplies to get started is about $1,500. A good quality mug press is anywhere from $250 - $500, plus warranties and protection in case anything goes wrong. A high-quality printer to print my designs on heat transfer paper is anywhere from $400-$600; this is important for getting clean lines and a clean transfer for a high-quality print on the mugs. Other costs for starting up, such as a few different sized mugs to print are anywhere from $80-$200 a case, heat transfer paper, transfer tape to hold designs in place while sublimating, ink for the printer, packaging to safely ship the mugs nationwide, etc. makes up the remainder of the up-front investment to get started on the right foot.
I’ve been saving some money towards investing in this expansion for my small business, but this has become a pressing issue as mug orders keep coming in. I don’t want to tell people they shouldn’t place orders at this time. I don’t want to keep turning locals away who would like a mug in a few days for a gift or some other occasion. I’ve been very fortunate, and most of my customers have been very understanding, but we all know that sort of patience will only last so long. I also lose out on a lot of business turning away anyone that I cannot service immediately.
Investing in the equipment to print my own mugs will also afford me the opportunity to have my own mugs on hand for local and bulk orders, the ability to have my mugs featured in local shops, and my own on-hand inventory to take to local craft/vendor shows once those start back up! I’ve been approached several times by local boutiques and small businesses asking if they can carry my mugs in their stores or collaborate on a project together, such as thank-you gifts for their customers or clients, and I’ve had to turn those wonderful opportunities down because I don’t have on-hand inventory and the cost is too expensive to order in bulk from the company I go through. I’ll also be able to participate in local craft fairs and events to be able to get my business name out there once those events start back up again!
Having this equipment will give me an incredible amount of independence and freedom in my business and I’ll have more control over the customer service aspect of my business where my mugs are concerned. I’ll be able to fill orders faster and ship them as soon as they are finished, while also making my mugs more affordable since the cost to print them will be far less than going through a third-party company to have them printed and shipped. My business and my customer’s orders will be my priority because it is MY business and I’ll be in total control, no longer at the mercy of someone else and their timeframes and restrictions.
I know and understand that everyone is struggling, small businesses and individuals especially. It is my goal to do everything in my power to support and serve my local community, while stimulating my own local economy and keeping money local!!! I hope to continue that practice and work harder to keep money local by investing in this equipment for myself.
