Community Treehouses by the River

Community Treehouses by the River

From Lindsey Kristen

We are building a small group of treehouses. These will be spaces for retreat and respite for anyone needing a dose of reconnection. The intent is for this to be a community build as well.

Our community and my family has been deeply impacted by the addiction crisis that has plagued our communities. Being in nature helped us through our hard times and we love to share our love of the outdoors with others through outings, events and other community building activities.

A big part of our journey was the light we have been able to find by renting our backyard treehouse out to guests from all over the country through Airbnb. They come to our property for peace and tranquility. We tap our maple trees and my kids serve them "sunshine" as they spend time in our gardens, ponds and woods.

Spectrum New Beginnings is a 501C3 that was created to make the yoga and mindfulness practices and nature immersions that changed our lives and helped us heal more accessible to the general population that needs them. Dan Loofboro and Lindsey Thaler manage this foundation with a team of our community's strongest healers from all modalities, that is growing daily. We are serving schools all over the Dayton area by providing yoga teachers in their classrooms on a weekly basis. We also serve veterans, PTSD patients, addiction centers, and more. Through this non-profit, we bring students from some of the urban communities of Dayton into the woods, river and other beautiful places to be surrounded by nature! We work with a number of schools from Dayton to Cincinnati, with the goal of putting an instructor in every classroom in our community once a week.

This past year, we began bringing our students to the treehouse and the river. It has become a special place to teach and connect them to nature in deeper ways by putting them in the trees! As part of our nature immersions, we have them "drink from the trees" and it has become a more powerful science lesson on conservation than anything I was able to teach in the classroom.  Our hope and vision is by building 1-3 more treehouses, we can continue to bring more kids into the woods in this way!

In the last few years we were given the opportunity to steward a 12 acre property along the Little Miami River in Oregonia, Ohio. It was always the intention to expand the treehouse concept to this space to bring more kids into the woods but there have been several roadblocks that have prevented this project from getting off the ground.

We call the property Saquu Elohi, which in Cherokee means "One Earth". It is our intention to bring this land back to it's native state by removing trash, and invasive plants, planting more native and edible plants, and just loving it with our good vibes! The dream is that this space becomes a respite of healing for those in need, including myself and my family by allowing us to plug in to the land's own healing process and that this work spreads up and down the river.

The cure for addiction (of all kinds, not just drugs and alcohol, but technology, etc.) is connection, and connecting to the healing of our planet is one of the biggest! We are working with a forest management plan and the Ohio Division of Forestry as well as other conservation groups that will give us the blueprint and expertise to do this work in the best way possible. Through our work here, we hope to inspire a more conservation minded culture in and around the Little Miami Corridor as well.

To do all this work we need your help! In line with "One Earth" we want community involvement. Literally. It is going to take us all. Follow our website at and also our presence on social media at:  Spectrum New Beginnings; Tiny House in a Tree; Tonic Dayton.

It you want to be a part of this project in any way, let us know! Thank you for taking the time to read this, for following our journey, and for all of the support we've received over the years. It's made all the difference and it's why you're reading this <3

Treehouse are expensive to build, I've done this before! The $25,000 we're raising here will get us started, but it will be just that. From there, we are working with several different organizations to support the rest of this project, with no expectations of scope. Every small amount helps, but this is not about the money, as we are raising this in a few different ways and don't foresee this being a roadblock. We are hosting community cleanups at the space all summer, which you can find out about on our Facebook page.

Lastly, we are looking for design ideas as well! If this speaks to you and you have these kinds of skills please message me personally at We have several plans already but are looking for at least 2 more. Our students will vote on best design concept, after which we will be creating our build "team" and we will pick up our feet and FLOW!

Sincerely and with love always!
