Update #3

Well, we have pretty much done it! We are technically still £14 off our goal, but we can pay off our debts and make a fresh start. There is still a lot of work to do, but without this financial boost we would not have been able to carry on at all, so I am immensely grateful for everyone's support and generosity. Our business rates will go down very significantly from next month, under new government rules, our landlord will sponsor us for a while at least, and I am working on various ideas and schemes to improve our income without losing the essence of what we are. Our non-commercial ethos is always going to prevent us from winning any business awards, but if we can keep going and keep offering secondhand books, arts events and a physical space to bring people together, that's all we need. Thank you all so much! Victoria xx

More Info

We are building community through the arts.  Great friendships have grown and continue to be formed here, we're providing a physical space that draws people in, selling books and hosting events that promote the arts as important in society.  People love our bookshop and venue!  We have high overheads and low profit margins, but feel we are doing something of value to our town and for the arts on a broader level.

We have hit make or break time financially, but want to survive, and want to strengthen and expand what we have so that we can be truly self-sustaining.

Read on for more detail on who we are, what we do and what we need!

The Tree House is a non-profit second-hand bookshop and arts venue in Kenilworth. Warwickshire.  We have been open for three years, building community through the arts - and very successfully.  We have a wonderful community of regulars, people who have made friends through the bookshop, and our community is always  growing.  People enjoy coming here and spending time here.  We host fabulous live music events with top professional musicians, usually on tour around the country (or even the world!).  We have films, open mics, poetry and other literary events, a book club, a craft group, a mail order book club, a book lending scheme and are hoping to start children's storytimes and other children's events.  We are always planning things.

The video is of one of our open mic events, and gives a flavour of the atmosphere here.  It's a warm, friendly, engaging, welcoming, happy place, with books, music, poetry, art, storytelling and more!  There is something for all ages.

We struggle with the overheads a bit though, and have just had a significant setback.  We are making longer term plans for various schemes and events, but need a kickstart to our finances to set us up again.  We keep our prices as low as we can, as our aim is to make books and good quality live cultural events accessible and affordable to as many people as possible on the high street, but it means our margins are always tight.

We think we have something wonderful, even magical, going on here, and want to continue doing what we're doing and improve and build on it where we can.  We would like an alcohol licence, some extra furnishings and improvements to things such as projection equipment and heating, to make events more comfortable and more appealing.  We are happy to do things on a shoestring, but we want the physical space to be magical and to reach more people and make sure we can pay all our bills.

If you can help, that would be amazing - every donation helps.

The funding levels listed are just guidance - you can give any amount you like, you don't need to give one of those amounts.  If everyone who follows us on social media gave £1, we would reach almost double our target (and it would all be put to very good use!) - it's a cliché, but every little really does help.  More helps even more, of course!  We are grateful for whatever you can afford.

Watch our video again and I hope you'll feel inspired!

Update #2

Less than £350 now needed - so close! And still 12 days to go. Any surplus from this campaign will be put towards renewing our film and PRS licences. Overwhelmed by the support! xx
