I have started a fundraiser to help out as many transgender/ non binary students of color as I can. College can be rough, please help me take one more thing off their plate.

The Trans/ Non-binary Youth of Color Education Assistance Campaign is not a part of any organization, school, or foundation. I am an individual that would like to assist with some of the smaller needs of students. This assistance campaign is very new, and I am still figuring out what students need help with. I have not always been open about my identity so when going to a place like the office of financial services, I couldn’t always admit all of my monetary struggles such as having to pay for hormones and other things that trans people may need. This is a new way for students to gain access to things that are considered out-of-pocket costs. There are a lot of scholarships that students can apply for, but this campaign actually will create a barrier-free opportunity for trans and non-binary students of color. NO GPA REQUIREMENT, NO GEOGRAPHIC REQUIREMENT, NO FOCUS REQUIREMENT!
With this Campaign I would like to give away a couple gift cards a month and eventually expand into helping in other ways. Some cards will be for school supplies, some for gas, and other hardships. I have five students currently waiting to receive gift cards for Staples. The requirements are:
1. Be a Youth of Color
2. Identify Trans or Non-Binary
3. Submit an application w/ 30 second video
Many students have a rough time in college because they spend more time with peers and some even get slapped in the face with life. I did horrible in undergraduate school but being in college was the best decision I have ever made. There were times when I had to go without because I didn’t have the high school GPA to apply for scholarships to support me. Even when students do have the grades to get scholarships, there are so many requirements that they somehow still end up not being able to apply. My parents were doing the best they could to make sure I ate and had clothes every day. I had nowhere to run for support with things that were important to becoming who I am today. While some colleges have support groups, there are others that don’t. These funds may cover gas for students to get to the nearest city for support, text books, food for a healthy diet, applications for jobs, or maybe they need to change their name and don’t have the court fees. These are the things I wish someone would have done for me early on in my life. Just a few years ago New York state made progress toward getting medicine covered for transgender/non-binary individuals, but there are still many states that haven’t even started that conversation.
So far, I have been posting on my social media pages to spread the news of what I am trying to do for students. I have been sharing in more than 10 different transgender and non- binary-focused Facebook closed groups. I have posted inside of non-profit LGBTQ-focused groups. I also work at the worlds global leader in LGBTQ health care, Callen-Lorde Community Health Care Center. This week I will be making calls to other organizations that have trans and non-binary youth initiatives to see if their students are interested. Whether connected by family, acquaintance or association, it is likely that you know a trans or non-binary person of color who is facing challenges that come with being a student. Join me in creating a change for this vulnerable youth.
I believe every trans person should have an opportunity to thrive in education. So, I will gradually increase the amount of the gifts cards over time. One less thing to stress about will help out with a student’s emotional and mental well-being. Please show your support and take initiative to help my cause gain traction so that others will follow! 100% of donations will be allocated to helping the students that are interested. I encourage you to give within your means as part of this effort, and to help us spread the word.
As a symbol of gratitude and recognition of your donations, all participating donors will have the opportunity to receive updates on the student they donated too. With your help, we can dramatically improve the overall quality of survival during a student’s educational time frame. Please feel free to contact me directly for further information.
Thank you for your consideration,
The campaign is going well! Although not much money has been raised, the word is spreading that black trans/ non- binary youth need support just like all the other students. I am excited to keep this moving along and what is going to come out of planting one seed at a time.
Can’t donate? Please share. Even a quick share on Facebook can help.
The average share raises $97.
