To celebrate my 30 years of service and provide an opportunity to raise money for this worthy cause, I will race in the Trans North Georgia Adventure (TNGA) in 2019. The TNGA is the premier bikepacking race on the east coast. Bikepacking is similar to backpacking, only instead of wearing a rucksack and hiking ten to twenty miles a day, you are on a mountain bike with custom made packs to carry your camping gear and you are covering in excess of one hundred miles a day on rugged single-track trails, asphalt roads, and everything in-between. Riders are completely unsupported, meaning you cannot have a chase vehicle or a team to assist your efforts. What you have is what you carry, you are on your own to finish.
I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Command Sergeant Major for the nation’s premier Cyber unit for 3 years. I came from an operational background, so there was a steep learning curve for me in this new technical field. I was quickly impressed by the expertise and professionalism I found in my organization which pursues our nation’s enemies in this new and unique domain.
While different from the physical land, sea, and air domains, it is no less important for our nation’s security that we dominate this new realm. My organization works tirelessly to deny, disrupt, and degrade our enemies’ use of technology to threaten our nation’s security, as well as use the enemies’ use of technology against them with deadly results.
A significant percentage of my unit is forward deployed at any given time. While they may not face the physical danger that many experience in direct combat operations with the enemy, they still endure the hardship of deployment. From my personal experience, I found that being separated from my family and missing significant events in my children’s lives was one of the most difficult aspects of serving in combat. The Digital Warrior Foundation is committed to providing support and relief for our nation’s premier cyber experts and their families in times of need and times of crisis. The DWF is a 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax deductible, for more information check us out at www.digitalwarriorfoundation.com. I have purchased all the necessary equipment and made all my travel arrangements with my own funds. One hundred percent of your donation will go to the foundation.
I urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to donate to a worthy cause. I’ll do my best to finish strong. Thanks.
