We are crossing generational and cultural divides by creating conversation about Urban Appalachian identity between college students and community members—including first, second, & third generation Appalachian migrants.
Together as a community, the Urban Appalachian Project will connect with heritage, engage in conversations about what it means to be Appalachian, and acknowledge diversity within cultural identity. Participants in the UAP will immerse themselves in scholarly research on Appalachian culture, learn methods for expressing Appalachian identity, build strong relationships between surrounding universities and communities, and encourage acceptance and appreciation of regional identities and cultural differences.
The Urban Appalachian Project will involve a core group of UAP Community Leaders, chosen from five participating regional universities, in leadership opportunities for the purpose of engaging diverse residents in the transformation and betterment of the Greater Cincinnati community. The UAP coalition of community advocates, humanities scholars and artists will guide the fellows in the collection of oral histories and planning of events, workshops and discussions around urban and rural Appalachian identity and culture.
We welcome you to be part of the community and join us in building current cultural identity and finding home in heritage. Follow the link below to learn more about how you can donate to the Urban Appalachian Community Coalition and our work!
