Computers are like any other electronic device in that they undergo wear and tear over time as they continue to be used. Whereas this is sad news to computers owners, it opens a whole myriad of possibilities for people who have expertise in computer maintenance because they can now provide computer repair service to those in need. Working as a computer technician comes with several advantages and a few disadvantages which I have made the subject of this article.

As you work as a computer technician, repairing and maintaining other people’s computers, you can be happy because you are saving people their information and media. Some of the information you will get to save is holds so much personal and business value that it cannot be got once it is lost. Let us look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of working as a computer technician – repairing and maintaining computers.

The first advantage of starting a computer repair service is that it requires very little start-up capital. The most important thing you need to start a computer repair service is knowledge of computer so that you can repair one when it is brought to you. Most maintenance procedures don’t require you to have any special tools or equipment. All you need are your hands and your brain.

The second advantage that is associated with starting a computer repair shop is that you have a huge target market. The proliferation of the personal computer has never been higher. Beyond the individual computer owners, most small businesses have dedicated IT departments that you can get to service in your line of work. The same applied to businesses that operate from homes.

Lastly, as you work as a computer repair expert, you get to choose how much work you do or how much time you dedicate to your business. Simply put, you get to decide when to work and when to focus on other things such as your family.

Starting a computer repair service is not all about pros. There are several cons associated with it as well and here are some of the major ones.

The first con related to working as a computer technician is that having knowledge in computer repair is simply not enough. You will need other skills as well, one of them being communication skills. You will need to know how to communicate with potential customers so that you convince them that you are the best fit for the job since there are several other technicians just like you. You will also need to some capital to set up your business in the form of money for buying tools, renting office space, marketing, and advertising among others.

You will also need to be certified because there are some clients who insist on it. This can be time consuming and expensive.

Last words…

Even though there are a few cons associated with working as a computer technician, it is still worth it to go for the job. The pros by far outweigh the shortcomings.
