More Info

From The MKF Founder:

Hello! My name is Winfred Kiunga and I started the Molly Kiunga Foundation in 2011.

I am a Kenyan woman with a background in International Development.

I have worked in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps with displaced persons from Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and other East African countries affected by war.

In 2008 I moved to the United States to work at Bates College as a Learning Associate in the Education and Anthropology departments. While there I also worked with resettled refugees in the Portland and Lewiston area.

In 2009, I moved to New Jersey to work among impoverished youth in Camden.

I returned to Kenya to continue my work among the poor through various community support projects.

I am passionate about education and providing educational opportunities in under-served communities.  This was my motivation for starting the Molly Kiunga Foundation (MKF).

The Foundation is named after my mother, who did everything she could to ensure all her children had access to good education. In addition, the creation of MKF was inspired by a small group of Kenyan women who paid tuition for my younger sister to attend the Alliance Girls High School.

I began my foundation work with a partnership at the Kihuyo Primary School in Nyeri County. This endeavor provided students from the school with a 4 year high school tuition scholarship.

To date, over 1000 local students have been benefitted from the Foundation.

Why am I Fundraising and how will your donations be used?

The Molly Kiunga Foundation seeks to support education and to develop leadership and life skills among refugees and Kenyan youth.

We have 3 major Projects:

  • The Youth Mentorship Project:
  • Mentoring youth on leadership, career choice, financial planning and other life skills
  • Providing training on basic computer literacy, Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS, Drugs: Misuse & Abuse
  • Providing after school tutoring for students
  • The Scholarship Project:
  • Providing direct financial support to students for secondary and university education
  • Providing school supplies to under-funded schools
  • The Girls Hadhi (dignity) Project:
  • Providing safe spaces for girls to talk about sexuality, Gender-based Violence and other topics
  • Self -esteem building activities
  • Providing Hadhi kits (sanitary products, soap, lotion, underwear)
