More Info

This first fundraiser has two goals:

1.  To fund counselling sessions for University students in need. The goal is to raise funds for 200 - 1 hour sessions (or 400 - 1/2 hour sessions). These sessions will be arranged with University Health Sevices at Concordia University and the University of Waterloo. Currently, students in distress are put on waiting list due to the shortage of counselling capacity or turned away! We are determined to change this. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for this purpose.

2. Establish The Michael Foldvari Memorial Award of Excellence in Anthropology given out at Concordia University (Michael's Alma Mater). The goal is to fund a perpetual annual award of $1000/year.From the funds we already raised we have committed $3000 to fund Awards for the first 3 years. In Michael's spirit this will reward integrity, impact on others, pushing boundaries and passion for music and arts. Our goal is to raise $30,000 for this purpose.

About Michael

Michael Foldvari (1995-2017) passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2017.

Michael was in his 4th year of his Honours Anthropology program at Concordia University in Montreal. Michael did his first two years of his Anthropology program at McMaster University before moving to Montreal. Michael was an extraordinary individual with broad knowledge of real and virtual societies, and passion for music, musicology, poetry and arts. He composed his unique music, developed his album and gave performances.  He was also writing poetry and short stories. He was the stalwart co-editor of the high school newspaper and in university the curator and host of two radio shows in Hamilton and Montreal. Michael loved to learn about different cultures, he visited many parts of the world, Hungary, Ghana, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, Dubai, South Korea, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, USA and Ireland. Michael was fluent in Hungarian and French as well.

He was the most gentle and understanding soul, had a sense of humor characteristic to him only and always aimed to convey profound ideas about the world. He enjoyed challenging and perplexing people with new ideas and bringing to the forefront obscure and unexpected things most people might not notice.

He collected vinyl records and books – he had a big library of both, and little things of significance like political mementos, a small walnut shell from the garden of his great grandparents in Hungary when we visited last year.

Michael was a scholar and a musicologist. Even at this young age he had a vast knowledge of the world, books and music.

As a true anthropologist-in-making, he studied virtual and real societies, the effect of music and humor on people and was determined to change the world. He was already planning his graduate studies to pursue knowledge in the interface of anthropology and music.
