“Derek, we are always going to be ‘partmers!’”
When I was around 4 or 5 years old, Mom and I used to love shopping for shoes and clothes at Giant Tiger. She would say, “Come on, partner let’s go to the store!” Excited, and still getting my "good English" together, I’d say “We gonna always be partmers! Right?” as I would pick out the items I wanted. She laughed, and for the rest of her life we were “partmers!”
A stickler for details, and blessed with a passion to serve, Mom enjoyed her career as a claims adjuster for Supreme Life Insurance Company, and she shared her time and talents with various church and community programs.
As President of the Leveda Missionary Circle for Women, and a financial Trustee of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, I watched her oversee the fiscal operations of those organizations while still actively participating in the serving of the sick and shut in, visiting the nursing homes, and providing food, love baskets and encouraging words.
Although serving her community was important to her, she made sure we had a happy home. Family was everything to her!
Mom and Dad (Ocie Barry Stokes, Jr “Chip”) used to love the Kinsman & Lee Thursday Night Mix Bowling League, card parties, the Cleveland Browns, and World Wide Wrestling! We also enjoyed the semi-monthly meetings and outings of, “The Group.” (All the immediate family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins) These were the times when we would all laugh till we cried, learned how to give and receive tough love, support one another in good and challenging times, uphold the family name, and serve the community.
Last week she told me that she loved me, and that we’ll always be “partmers.” I’m looking forward to taking the torch and carrying on her legacy.
