More Info

City Central of Mobile is a diverse community without many services. The people of St. Mark UMC are stepping up. Serving through bill-paying assistance programs, afternoon programs for middle and high schoolers, and other services, the people of St. Mark have recognized food security issues in City Central. This is not surprising, considering that within a mile radius of the St. Mark campus (439 Azalea Rd.), the poverty rate is twice the national average as is the percentage of single parent households.

The Garden at City Central is a continuation of the people of St. Mark's desire to serve in meaningful ways that can transform lives. The fresh food from the Garden will be a part of the food distribution ministry. In addition, food preparation classes will also be held. Our hope is to make fresh collard greens as accessible as the bag of potato chips at the gas station.

You can help us out. The initial costs will involve a rainwater harvesting system, ground preparation, and gardening utensils. Also, we are planning for this area to be community space for prayer and meditation. Art exhibited on the fences surrounding the Garden and sitting areas will help create a peaceful atmosphere.
