Holbert Gatarwa Ngugi is a volunteer community health and social worker based in the slums and rural areas of Gituamba ward, Gatundu North sub-county,Kiambu county. He has devoted his time and efforts towards the fight against the spread of the corona virus since it's onset in Kenya last year (2020).
I took up the the personal duty and responsibility when I saw the images of the effects of COVID-19 in Wuhan China and around the world. The first reported case and the appeal by the health cabinet secretary in my country for the youth to take the leading role in the fight against the pandemic prompted me to become a front line volunteer. My main duties is to create awareness on best practices to combat the spread of corona virus such as hand washing with running water and soap, wearing of face masks, observing the social distance, the use of sanitizers and to adhere to the laid down government regulations. I have been able to form a network of volunteers (about 50) who have joined me in this endeavor. The main challenges in the community we serve is lack of information, government bureaucracy, negative attitude and negligence, poor waste management practices, poor hygiene and sanitation, poverty and unemployment, alcohol and drugs abuse and overpopulation. Our dedicated volunteers are faced with lack of proper equipment such as face masks, gloves, protective gear, educational materials, sanitizers among others. Our mission is to empower and encourage the participation of the community members through best practices to curb the spread of the the virus Currently we need to establish a small office for coordinating our activities and to provide the basic necessities to our volunteers. We are appealing to well wishers and donors to assist us in cash and kind towards the purchase of office equipment (laptop, computers, digital camera, printer, tablets, stationery and furniture) and to purchase basic equipment necessary in the fight against the pandemic. We intend to start a social enterprise to produce liquid soap and detergents and waste management in the neighborhoods in order to control the spread of the virus as well as ensure sustainability of our project. We hope that you will kindly support our initiative. Thank you.
