The Goal

As a friend circle that has grown up together it is such a blessing that we all can work together during difficult times.  Owen has gone through his first surgery and is doing well but there are still more steps to be taken.  John and Megan have been by his side throughout this entire process and to do so have ahd to take time off from their jobs.  We wanted to set this up to help provide them some financial support as they continue to nurture their gorgeous family.  100% of these funds we raise together will be donated to Megan and John in honor of baby Owen.

Original Facebook Post about what Baby Owen endured:

We have decided we are ready to tell the world about our sweet little man. Owen Michael Errecalde was born on Wednesday October 16th at 10:36 am in Modesto, CA. He was 7lb.s 4 oz. and measured 20 in. long. He was vey alert and happy right away. Labor and delivery could not have gone any better. Just as we planned, no drugs or intervention of any kind, a very natural birth. Around 2:30 pm we were sent to recover in a different room. A pediatrician came in shortly after to examine Owen. He looked perfect. At 5:00 he was due for his 3rd feeding of the day. As I tried to feed him he would not wake up. A nurse came in to help and noticed he was looking a little dusty and purple. She said she wanted to take him into the NICU to check his oxygen she would have him back in 5 minutes. instead of Owen coming back in 5 the pediatrician came in. He told me Owen's oxygen levels were low and they were going to run some test and take an x-ray to determine if it was his heart or lungs causing the issue. The next time the Dr. came into my room he said the test and x-ray show its not his lungs but his heart that is not doing its job to give his body oxygen. Kaiser could not do anything to treat this they needed to life flight him to UCSF right away. Kaiser bent over backwards to discharge me only 10 hours after giving birth so John and I both could be with him at UCSF. We were able to see Owen in the NICU before transport. From there it turned into even more of a roller coaster. He was critical, got stable, transport was taking him, then a different transport team was called to take him. We scrambled to get to San Francisco ASAP. After checking in at a hotel we went to UCSF children's hospital hoping to get more answers. We arrived at 1:00 am and Owen was rolled in just behind us. We slept in a waiting room for 2 hours until a Dr. came in to speak with us. Owen was diagnosed with congenital heart failure. Meaning if something wasn't done to treat him he would not live. To be more specific his condition is called Transposition of the Great Arteries. Basically, Owen's heart is working great but the aorta and pulmonary artery are in switched positions. Only about 5 out of every 10,000 babies are born with this defect. He was responding well to a drug called prostaglandin(PGE) that was keeping his ducts arteriosous, (an opening in the heart that closes shortly after birth), open to allow oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood to mix in his heart and be pumped through the body. To treat this defect Owen is going to need surgery. The surgery is called an Arterial Switch. We were told over the next few days, by meeting with lots of Dr.s, that the surgery has a 95% success rate, Owen will be a completely normal little boy with a cool scar and for the rest of his life he will be closely watched by a cardiologist. Everyone at UCSF, pediatricians, nurses, nurse practitioners, cardiologists and and Owen's Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon are all the most wonderful people we've met. We couldn't ask for a better team to care for our little man. While everyday is hard, they are getting easier. Owen is making improvements all the time with some challenges here and there. He will stay in the ICU at UCSF until his surgury on the 28th. His recovery time is expected to be 7-10 days. We are hopeful that Owen will be home before his daddy's birthday! In the mean time we are driving back and forth to SF and sleeping in waiting rooms or hotels. We are on a waiting list for the Ronald McDonald House and the Family House. Once we get in we will be living in SF until Owen can come home with us. Of course, with an easy and healthy pregnancy this was the last thing we were expecting. With lots of prayer and loving support we and Owen will get through this.
