In 2014 we left Dallas.
We left a successful Texas Tar Heels program, our jobs, our friends and moved to New York. We thought that this change was a way for us to get grounded, to make us understand that basketball wasn't what we were called to do. Coach Nate didn't coach in New York. He didn't train in New York. He did not touch a basketball for 14 months. But during our time New York, something wasn’t right. We were not unhappy in New York. Something just did not feel right. But we could not put our finger on what that “something” was exactly.
So we prayed. We read. We let God be our guide.
Then we had our freeing moment.
We realized that our calling, our passion, was to affect young people. And that basketball was more than just a sport, more than just a business. It was the vehicle, the means for us to have a positive impact on the lives of young people.
We’ll never forget this moment. We were sitting on the bed in the bedroom of Sharon’s mother's house. We looked at each other, and we said, “This is not working.” This is not really where we are meant to be. Sharon said, “Our home is in Texas.” So that was a Friday, two weeks later, we moved back to Texas. Packed up and we drove and we drove. We drove three days back.
Back home to Texas.
Ever since then, the idea of Home has been something we have treasured. Everyone needs a place to call Home. A place where they feel safe, welcomed and loved. A place where they belong.
We want our Texas Tar Heel family to have a Home.
We are looking to build a facility and make it our Home. A place for our organization to not just practice and play, but to be a sanctuary, providing escape for kids who might need additional support and guidance to reach their full potential.
But to make this a reality, we need your help. We are launching the “Texas Tar Heels: HOME “ campaign to raise $2,000,000 to help us fund this dream and make a Home for the Texas Tar Heels.
