Tech On The Cape is an experience for Inkululeko (www.inkululeko.org) learners from Makhanda in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa to travel to, learn from, and engage with, corporations and nonprofits in Cape Town that have a social mission.
Inkululeko contributes to the new South Africa by meeting tomorrow’s leaders, where they’re at, today. The organization offers free tutoring, access to computers and the internet, transportation, exam prep, a library of textbooks and regular books (and snacks too!) to young people beginning in grade eight and remain with them through grade 12.
In order for learners to make informed decisions about their education, more career development is required. Much like the US, the cost of higher education is a barrier for our learners to enter university. Once they are in a higher education institution, we hope they make the best of their time and talents, while also making smart investments in their future.
New programs such as Tech on the Cape will play a critical role in this effort. Learning outcomes for the trip include increasing self-efficacy and understanding of educational and vocational options available to learners after high school.
