Team Mia for Puppies Behind Bars

From Amy Pasquariello

I am running a 5K in Pawling, NY to raise money for Puppies Behind Bars (PBB), an organization that trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and first responders. Dogs change lives!

On October 20th I am running a 5K to raise funds for the outstanding organization Puppies Behind Bars (subject of the documentary Prison Dogs, trailer linked in the pictures above). Over the next two years, I am committed to raising $6,000 to sponsor a service dog's training, and this month I'm hoping to raise $500 towards that goal. Last month my friends and I raised $270 through a bake sale. With your support, I hope that running this 5K will bring me closer to my goal!

My mom and dad introduced us to PBB when they surprised us with a released dog, Luke, almost exactly one year ago! Luke spent the first two years of his life in prison, training to be a service dog, but because of PBB's extremely high standards, he didn't graduate, and he was released for adoption. Once Luke joined our family, we learned so much about PBB and we understood first-hand how a dog can impact and change people's lives.

Puppies Behind Bars is an incredible organization that gives prison inmates valuable life skills to use when released from prison and a positive purpose by teaching them to train service dogs for military veterans and first responders. PBB dogs are matched with veterans and first responders who have PTSD to help them cope with the mental, emotional, and physical ramifications of their trauma. Some dogs are also trained to serve as explosive-detection canines. Additionally, while some dogs are completing their training, they are used to help children who have suffered abuse. Instead of having the children talk to an official, which can be scary, they face the opposite direction and tell their story to a friendly pup.

Puppies Behind Bars is a busy and active non-profit organization that can always use a helping hand. To help their amazing cause, I am raising funds independently, with their support and encouragement. With the $6000 I hope to raise, I will sponsor a puppy-in-training. This money will cover the full costs associated with a puppy's lifetime in the the program, and will release a highly trained service dog into the community.

I will achieve my goal by raising funds with two friends, Michaela (who started the campaign!!) and Piper, through bake sales, babysitting, 5k runs, and other events over the next two years. I hope you can help me accomplish this goal. Thank you all!
