I'm running for a seat on the board of education so I can make a difference in our schools and in our community. I want to work together with the families in the community as well as the teachers and staff in the school district to continue to improve the school experience and lives of children in USD 446. It is important to me to listen to the concerns of everyone involved so we can all work together towards the best outcome for our children and our community.

I mention community as a whole and not just the students and families of USD 446 because the quality of our education system from Preschool all the way through High School has a direct affect on the future of our community. Not only that but the school board also determines whether funding for our local library will be increased or not. This is important because the library also has a major impact on our community as it has a wide variety of valuable resources that go well beyond books and media that directly affect the lives of everyone in our community. It is a lively hub of activity in the community that is welcoming to everyone and a crucial safe space for many.

Feeling safe is crucial to the well being and education of people of all ages but especially to children who are the most vulnerable. While talking with parents in the community in person and online I've found bullying to be a common concern among them. I will work to find a way for our district to not only have a punitive reaction to bullying but to take preventative action to stop it before it happens. Then when it does occur rather than just reacting by punishing the bully we can help all involved, the victim, the bystanders, and even the bully to better improve the situation and help prevent future issues. Many school districts have a behavioral specialist on staff to help with this and other behavioral issues and they greatly help the students while also taking some of the pressure off the teachers and staff. I think a position like this would be worth considering for our district.
