We need your help to provide a safe space for vulnerable and at-risk female youth in our community. Stars Youth Refuge Inc. (SYR) is building a 24/7 crisis accommodation for female youth from the ages of 12 to 18 years in South-West Sydney. Our target group are female youth at risk of homelessness or are homeless. Our aim is to provide a government compliant service where youth can seek refuge.

Why do youth end up homeless?

There are many reasons why female youth can become homeless:

·         Sexual abuse

·         Domestic Violence

·         Parents or youth with drug addictions

·         Parents with severe diagnosed mental health issues

·         No relatives to go to

·         Youth at the onset of mental health issues

·         Potential child brides

·         Youth whose parents have passed away suddenly

Have you have ever known somebody to be in this situation?

Why is this important?

Current refuges in and around Sydney are overwhelmed and unable to cope with the number of adults seeking refuge, let along girls at risk of homelessness or currently homeless.

Currently there are no youth refuges in Australia which are specifically designed for young girls of Arabic, Sub-Continent, or Islamic backgrounds. This is a major issue for youth who come from diverse backgrounds.

Marred by cultural barriers, lack of female-only services, language barriers of the person or their parents, many do not know where to turn. They are less likely to seek help from the wider community. The fear of stigma, social expectations and embarrassment means many of our girls may end up “couch surfing”, in the homes of predators, sleeping in unsafe environments such as parks or turning to the streets to keep themselves from going home.

While we seek to provide a safe and culturally sensitive refuge for girls in the South-West Sydney area, our doors are open to any girl at risk of homelessness, no one will be turned away.

We are here to:

  • Offer our youth a safe place to sleep
  • Work with families in reuniting youth with their family
  • Case manage the youth to reach goals and work towards independence
  • Offer support and understanding from a cultural point of view

What is the goal?

Your sponsorship would support the refuge in one of the following ways:
