Hello Everyone, my name is Sydney, and I am a High School Senior in Stockton, Ca. with a 4.3 GPA, I am also concurrently completing my degree in Entrepreneurship at Columbia College. Over the last four years, I have accumulated over 2000 community service hours as a member of the Black Youth Leadership Project, Black Girls Code, The Melanin Unschoolers, The Edible School Yard, as a community doula, and within my faith community.
As a freshman, I took cultural geography and after reading Assata, and watching the documentary Black in Cuba fell in love with Cuba, the people, the music, and the culture. I have taken 4.5 years of Spanish, and I have fallen in love with the language. As such, I have cultivated my senior project not only to be a cultural and language immersion experience but as a tangible way to pour into the community that I have come to know and love throughout this process. While in Cuba, I will have the opportunity to embed myself in the culture and religion and visit historic and sacred spaces and ceremonies.
Cuba, although rich in culture, music, and beauty, is a country where getting basic necessities can be a challenge and out of financial reach for most. Kits for kids will provide oral hygiene, personal/feminine hygiene, school supplies, school supplies, and yummy treats. I am also planning to throw a cultural exchange feast in appreciation.
I am fundraising to help cover the cost of a goal of 100 “kits for kids,” including (but not limited to) personal hygiene, feminine products, school supplies, toys and a few goodies and snacks, travel/shipping, and a cultural community feast.
