More Info

Hi, my name is Ella! I am 17 years old and swim for EDGE Swim Club in South Burlington, Vermont. I wanted to do something to help the children who are being affected by the war in Ukraine. Not only are they in need of immediate help, but will continue be for a long time.

Since there is more power in numbers, I thought a great group to help in my efforts would be the one I have been part of since I was 8 years old: my swim club.

The Crisis in Ukraine: According to the United Nations Children's Fund, 4.3 million Ukrainian children have been forced out their homes, which is over half of the 7.5 million total child population. They have been forced to leave everything behind: Their homes, their schools, and often, their family members. In addition to the millions that have been displaced, half of the estimated 3.2 million children who remain in Ukraine are at risk for not having enough food.

Ongoing violence across Ukraine has created a crisis for children and their families that could last for generations. I strongly believe it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to help alleviate the current and long term suffering of these innocent victims of this war.

The Campaign: As a team, we will be tracking the yards we swim in practices and converting them to miles. Our collective goal is to swim the distance from Burlington to Kyiv: 4,462 miles (the equivalent of 7,853,120 yards), to express our support for the victims of this humanitarian crisis.

Receive Progress Updates!

Every week, donors and supporters will be Emailed an update on our progress (which will also appear on this page) in a fun graphic, where you'll see where our team mascot, Manō (Hawaiian for "shark") is along his swim from Burlington to Kyiv! You'll receive weather and water reports as well as learn cultural facts based on where he is on his long journey! We'll also be sharing photos and videos of our team (which will appear at the top of this page in the photo & video gallery as well).

Your Donations: During this campaign, we will be accepting financial donations which will be given to the humanitarian organization, Save the Children. https://www.savethechildren.net

“Cardigan Mountain State Park spans 5,655 areas and is an excellent area for hiking. A mountain road leads to trails on the west slop of Mount Cardigan as well as a trail to the summit. Mount Cardigan’s 3,121-foot treeless granite summit affords outstanding views of west central New Hampshire with a panorama that includes Mount Monadnock and the White Mountains, Camel’s Hump in Vermont, and Pleasant Mountain in Maine.”

Manō started his journey to Ukraine today from the city of Burlington, which in northwestern Vermont on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, south of the Canadian border. Burlington, founded in 1865 has a current population of 43,185. Lake Champlain is a natural freshwater lake and home to the oldest known fossil reef in the world (450-480 million years old) and some think that there may still be a dinosaur in the lake, known fondly as "Champ".
