As many of my close friends and family know, I have been very involved in our local volunteer Search and Rescue organization over the last year or so.
The Del Norte Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring a few of us and sending us down to get Swift Water rescue training.
Our community has as desperate need for this.
Hwy 199 on the Smith River is one of the deadliest highways in the United States, claiming dozens of lives every year.
A fair amount of people end up going over the bank and into the river, where they most often drown. Rescue and recovery of these victims is often complicated, and resources are limited.
As well as a member of SAR, I am also a paramedic employed by our local ambulance service. I have responded countless times to these incidents, and watched helplessly from the road above as people have perished in the river.
It’s tragic beyond imagination, and I have decided that I want to be part of the solution.
Our rescue community is continually adapting to this hazard, are improving our incident command systems and response times, but in the end, the biggest issue is a shortage of trained Swift Water rescuers and divers.
We’re a small county, and the amount of current first responders certified to enter the river and attempt to save people can be counted on one hand.
We’re trying to change that.
