Raising money to buy warm weather gear that helps the homeless in Seattle. We have a pop up retail store on Thanksgiving Day to giveaway all the goods.
Thanks for stopping by. Our event started in 1999 on Thanksgiving day. Patti and I had just finished making a Thanksgiving dinner that was "way" too much food. This was our first Thanksgiving in Seattle together and it was just the two of us. Patti had the suggestion that we fill a few plates up and give it to some homeless guys who used to hang around the local convenience store.
When we delivered the plates of food to them we asked them what other things they needed that would really help them. They suggested gloves and socks. We went out the next day and bought some socks and gloves and gave them away to these three guys. That was the first year.
The next several years we just kept asking them what they needed and we started getting help from our friends to buy the goods and deliver the goods. From the year 2000 -2008 we would drive from place to place in all areas of downtown Seattle and find homeless people and give them clothing and food. The last two years of that period, 2007, 2008, we had two full SUV's full of goods and had our friends helping us distribute the gear to the citizens of Seattle. Each year we would talk with them, hear their stories and learn what they really needed.
In 2009 we called Tim Harris, executive director at Real Change and asked him if he would like to help with our "little" event. He was extremely enthusiastic and it has now gotten organized and we have a very clear vision of what could be happening in any city or town that wants it to happen. We believe we can help thousands in this way not hundreds. But we can only do this with the help of thousands of people like yourself.
Each year we see many faces and hear many stories about our citizens on the street and each year we find more ways to help thanks to great volunteers and others with similar ideas on helping. We are now asking for everyones help that has a belief that it is important to help others who are forced to live on the street.
We created Survive the Streets so you can join our mission of helping get some of the homeless off the street. With this money we will continue to fight homelessness in Seattle and introduce this event to other major cities across the US.. Email
