What Is SurfWithoutBorders?

It is an organization that will be setting up a surf program in local underprivileged schools, being with Education Without Borders in Cape Town, South Africa. Using surf therapy techniques and local assets the program will provide a positively life altering experience for the children.

To begin with, Education Without Borders provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged and at-risk children through initiatives in South Africa and Canada, including after-school support programs in Math, English, Science, school leadership and youth mentorship. Learn more here

We will then also be partnering with the 9Miles Project, which through the provision of supplementary education, literacy classes, learning adventures, life skills and leadership training, including sports (namely surfing) 9Miles Project creates sustainable opportunities that engage, uplift, equip and empower impoverished and high risk youth from coastal informal settlements and communities. Learn more

Through these two organizations, we will be forming a sustainable programs that continues to empower the children for years to come.

How It Helps?

Other than being super fun, surf therapy is an incredible, therapeutic and life-changing program. The benefits of surfing are now being discovered through various studies and observations.

Surfing is being used to help relieve PTSD and anxiety by numerous organizations (Waves for Change and Wounded Warriors Project to name a few). It also allows people of all ages to develop a passion that keeps them healthy and maintaining a positive outlook on life and the future.

Many children from poor, underprivileged communities turn towards drugs and crime as ways to escape. Surfing gives them a different escape. Surfing is a positive outlet for boredom which leads to further healthy lifestyle choices and relationships.

The program will also be a great incentive to both attend and do well in school, as these will be the students who will get to participate. The fun experience they have and then share will lead other students to also do the same.

As the program begins and grows it will also stimulate the local community and schools as instructors and all other expenses, will be sourced locally.

How we are going to do it?

ALL donations go towards the initial creation of the program. This includes purchasing or obtaining surfboards and wetsuits, if necessary. Then also teaching instructors how to teach surfing, ocean safety and to then run the program.

Initial setup aspects include talking and building a bond and trust with the kids before they even go to the beach. Creating a bond that allows them to confidently participate and also for us to understand what will be most beneficial for them.

Other parts of the program include food (snacks and lunch), ocean safety lessons as well as fun beach games. The children will also be given lessons on ocean pollution and how it affects all ecosystems beyond just the local beaches.

The long term benefits are of course numerous. As the children, share this passion and grow with it, they become more caring and compassionate not just towards friends and family, but the entire earth.

The Future

The long term goal of Surf Without Borders is growing into an organization implementing these surf therapy programs in impoverished coastal schools and communities around the globe.

The benefits and impacts that this program is capable of are incredibly beneficial again to local communities, but also in a global society. These impacts and connections will all be shared through stories, social media, videos etc. as the organization grows and evolves.
