Supporting Christine

Supporting Christine

From Ruth Gordon

As we are all aware of after COVID, life just doesn't always go as planned. My mother Christine Gordon is on her second round with colon cancer. She has not been able to continue to work. I hope to provide some support.

We met with the radiation oncologist Tuesday. They have a plan for chemo/radiation daily for 5 weeks. My mom asked if I learned anything after the meeting, I said just the plan for you. The rest is all things I'm familiar with but I have to say I don't really enjoy being on this side of treatment/healthcare.
I don't treat patients for cancer but I've had patients with cancer and collaboration is important. I have to say that most oncologist are some of the best to work with. They share, teach, and collaborate care easily. I am grateful for her providers and that I can be part of the process.

More Info

March is colorectal cancer awareness month.

Keeping track of it all has been a challenge but here we go. My mother, Christine Gordon was diagnosed with colon cancer Feb. 2021. She had her first surgery following diagnosis and all seemed well again. Fall of 2021 symptoms returned and she required a second surgery with ostomy. This surgery certainly did not go as planned. She was hospitalized for 3 weeks after her 12/21/21 surgery. She spent the holidays locked in a hospital, away from family. I'm still a little bitter about the restrictions. This is when reality set in that she would not likely be returning to work as planned, for a long while. She helped care for children in the Des Moines metro area since 1995. She was working in Ankeny at a center but is unable to return due to treatment. Post surgery she is receiving chemo and later with complete radiation.

Believe me this breaks her heart. She loves the company she works for, the co-workers she works with, and the kids she cares for even more. She is not ready to retire and even this unplanned break has been difficult for her.

She doesn't have the insurance, savings, or income to cover everything. She has yet to receive the final bill from the 3 week hospitalization. I want to try to help her and show her how much support she does have.
