More Info

ShaCorrie and Saja Tunkara met almost ten years ago. They fell in love and had two beautiful children, Sasha and Adam. While ShaCorrie took care of the kids, Saja worked tirelessly to provide for their family, often juggling multiple jobs at a time. But tragedy struck in January 2018 when ICE officials picked up Saja and detained him in the Northwest Detention Center.

ShaCorrie fought tirelessly for Saja's release from detention, paying thousands of dollars in legal fees to immigration attorneys and visiting the detention center with the kids to try and keep Saja's spirits up. But his physical health soon deteriorated as a tumor remained untreated because ICE refused to release him for surgery. ShaCorrie also began organizing with other members of the community who had loved ones in the detention center, using her voice to raise awareness about the lack of medical care and dangerous conditions in the detention facility. While Saja was eventually allowed out briefly to receive surgery, his other health problems continued to worsen through the prolonged detention.

ShaCorrie never tired and continued fighting, speaking to the public and press about the conditions in the detention center and Saja's case: https://www.federalwaymirror.com/news/incarcerated-and-infirmed-how-northwest-detention-center-is-failing-sick-inmates/

Then, in October 2018, she received a phone call in the middle of the night from ICE telling her to pack a bag because Saja was being deported that day. She didn't get to see him or let the kids say goodbye - he was just gone.

Saja is now in Sierra Leone, cut off from his family in America and having to struggle to start life all over again. ShaCorrie and the children also have to start over, trying to carve out a life where their family is divided by an ocean.

Please join us in raising money to support the Tunkara family. Your donation will go towards helping Saja get setup in his new life and hopefully allow ShaCorrie, Sasha and Adam to go visit him soon. It will also cover food, clothing, and critical bills for the family.
