Project Companion

We are veterans and community leaders choosing to support Minnesota veterans with highly trained dogs for men and women military veterans diagnosed and treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),  Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and military assault traumas.

The goals and objectives of PetsLoyal2Vets are to match up to 50 certified dogs per year with veterans that will aid the veteran once they have completed a VA sponsored mental health program. PL2VETS will be instrumental in helping those vets obtain a higher quality of life and adjust to his or her home and civilian life as well as helping save the life of a companion dog that would otherwise be forgotten.

Know that your donation is going to help certify these dogs for our wounded veterans and that 100% of the funds stays in Minnesota to assist Minnesota veterans.

PetsLoyal2Vets is one of only a few such organizations in the country and the "only non-profit organization" in Minnesota that will exclusively train and adopt free of charge three levels of certified dogs to qualifying veterans. We are not a for profit doggy day care or boarding kennel facility where up to 60 dogs mingle, get rough and spread diseases, nor are we a for profit boarding kennel looking to offset expenses of a for profit facility.  PL2Vets was formed as a 501c3 nonprofit built upon the grass roots efforts of Minnesota veterans realizing that the war within does not go away with handfuls of medications.  We have no paid staff members and a very minimum cost associated with our overhead expenses like utilities and training equipment.

By donating, your support is tied directly to "Project Companion" and not to excessive administrative overhead as you see in for profit kennels, and salaries as seen in other organizations.  We are in good standing with the State of Minnesota and meet all of our IRS obligations every year.

We feel, it is vital that we:

  • Build lasting relationships between military veterans, the VA Hospital staff, other institutions and community based animal welfare providers.
  • Create a coordinated referrals program from community based animal welfare organizations, military partners and military families seeking companion or therapy dogs.
  • Develop and implement a resource map and training platform so the community as a whole will be able to identify, refer and assist PetsLoyal2Vets.org in finding and accessing appropriate resources to the benefit of all involved.
  • Empower veterans diagnosed with PTSD or TBI so they can be utilized as strategic assets within their respective communities.
  • Support veteran and animal welfare partnerships which foster improved access to companion and therapy dogs while assisting veterans with a more successful transition to civilian life.
  • Leverage community resources and opportunities which will complement collaborations with other foundations, corporate sponsors, volunteer and community partnerships.
  • And provide badly needed services so Minnesota veterans are not forced to leave their homes and families to travel out of state.

PL2VETS was created by veterans for veterans from every branch of service.

PL2VETS is also available to veterans who once had a therapy dog which passed away and are now in need of new companion. Any veteran in Minnesota who has completed a VA sponsored PTSD or TBI trauma based program and now requires a Minneapolis VA Hospital stay for up to 30 days can drop off their therapy dog and we will care for it at no charge to the veteran. We will even bring their dog to the Minneapolis VA Hospital on doctor approved visits so they continue to bond with their companion. Maintaining this valuable connection of veterans supporting veterans throughout Minnesota will help provide badly needed services and at no cost to the veteran.

Your generous support in helping us reach our goal will have far reaching benefits to many communities throughout Minnesota for years to come. Fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of veterans will now have a resource close to home that will help their family member. Our disabled vets made major sacrifices for this country, and now it's our turn to show our veterans in need of a companion or therapy dog how much we care for them.

Please help spread the word and create your own funding badge then enlists the help of co-workers, family and friends to help you reach your goal.  If your company offers employee giving programs, this is a great way to get your co-workers involved.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact us at 612-396-3369.

Update #8

In December 2015, the final stages of installing the AC unit and duct work was completed. Due to a setback by a kennel who promised to donate 6 puppies for our veterans, we were set back by 6 months. In January 2016, 7 puppies were donated to Pets Loyal 2 Vets to be adopted to foster families and veterans in March 2016. We are happy to announce those puppies have been doing very well and are in weekly training classes at our facility. We are now looking for 6 more puppies to be donated to the organization to be placed with veterans in training. If you know of a breeder who is willing to donate, please send them to our dog donation tab on our web site at http://petsloyal2vets.org/dog-donations/

Update #7

We are excited to announce we are nearing completion of the new training facility and that every donor and volunteer that helped make this a reality should be proud that they were a part of making it all happen. We are now in the process of sourcing dogs for veterans on our waiting list and are looking at many possibilities. If you are interested in donating a dog that is trainable, between the ages of 10 to 24 months in age, and the dog has been spayed or neutered and they are in healthy condition, please use our dog donation form on our web site. You can also call 612-396-3369 with questions about this process.

Update #6

Thank you to everyone who has supported Pets Loyal 2 Vets through these past 18 months while we built the new training facility here in Prior Lake, MN. We are nearly completed. As with any grass roots efforts, we could not have made the progress we have if it were not for the dozens of veterans and volunteers who have stopped out and lent a hand. Working from a small budget, we were able to build this new facility to train approximately 50 certified dogs per year for veterans enrolled in our programs. This is not a doggy day care or a for profit boarding kennel but rather Minnesota's first all veteran service dog training facility where every dog trained, is free to the veteran.

We cannot say thank you enough to all those individuals, organizations and company's who have donated to Project Companion. Once we have the air circulation and filtration unit installed, we can begin to house the dogs. We will be training Labradors, Retreivers and other great breeds like the puppy you see in the photo. The kennels are in place, the floor is done and we just need to raise $12,000 to help pay for the new air filtration system. Please remember PL2V for your giving plans this holiday season. Stay tuned for the ribbon cutting open house.

We are on track to laying down the ground insulation and then the new in floor heating system that will keep these dogs toasty warm this coming winter. In early July we will be pouring concrete as well. To follow our progress more closely, click the Timeline tab on our web site.

We could not accomplish "Project Companion" without the support of many individuals, corporate sponsors and donations paving the way. With 17 veterans on the waiting list for a new dog, time is of the essence. Veterans cannot wait years for progress to take shape when they need the help now.

Please spread the word to your network of friends, family and co-workers to visit your Fundly donation badge for Pets Loyal 2 Vets and donate today.

Our sincerest thanks to Debra Chellsen for her $250 donation.

To help us put 15-25 trained homeless dogs per year into the hands of caring disabled veterans, please support PetsLoyal2Vets.org by making your tax deductible contribution like Debra. One of the best ways to raise funds fast is to create your own fundraising badge for PetsLoyal2Vets so you can invite friends, co-workers and family to contribute under your badge. Each person who exceeds their fund raising goal will receive a recognition award for their accomplishment. It's easy and can truly benefit many homeless dogs and disabled veterans.
