Support for University of Khartoum Linguistics Department

From Peter Jenks

The U of Khartoum linguistics department was ransacked by the Sudanese military in response to pro-democracy protests. Sharon Rose and I are raising funds on our colleagues' behalf to replace what was lost.

Dear friends,

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, is in need of our support. The department was ransacked by the military in June of this year during the Sudanese sit-ins and protests that led to the fall of the previous government.

All their electronic equipment was stolen, including computers,  printers, recording equipment, projector, fans and air-conditioning units. Since university professors joined with the Sudanese Professionals Association in participating in peaceful sit-ins, the university became a target of retribution and many departments suffered the same fate.

Now that there is a new transitional government  in Sudan and the prospect of peace, the academic year is set to begin, and our colleagues are asking for help to replace the equipment. The university's economic situation means that it is only able to provide minimal support right now. We can vouch that the money will reach our colleagues and that they will use it for its intended purpose. We know the scholars at the University of Khartoum personally and they have welcomed many foreign researchers to their department to work on Sudanese languages with warm hospitality. Any amount you can contribute will be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Sharon Rose, Department of Linguistics, UC San Diego

Peter Jenks, Department of Linguistics, UC Berkeley
