Today, my heart sank three times as in one day I heard the heartbreaking stories of three mothers with children with special needs in Bulgaria (one with Dawn Syndrome and two with Autism). Bulgarian society and some of the teachers and directors in particular have a long way to go towards tolerance, acceptance and support for such children. In the United States, children with special needs are treated with kindness and understanding, they are supported in reaching their maximum potential. We have had the privilege to work with many golden-hearted directors and educators in Bulgaria who go beyond their duty to help our special children. We are so thankful to them! But for others in Bulgaria, mentality needs to change and evolve. Nothing is broken and nothing is wrong with these children. They are smart, creative and deserving of love and happiness like anyone else. Attitudes are broken and wrong. Please help by promoting kindness, understanding and support for families of children with special needs in Bulgaria. Please, spread the word.
