More Info

With our hearts and financial support, we lift up our family and guests.  Please support this initiative to alleviate the personal financial costs and losses of this tragedy.

They had no warning: the museum and grass house ripped apart, walls crumbled upon them, they dug each other from glass and rubble, provided triage and comfort to the injured all while being inaccessible to emergency crews for hours. At least forty participants were seriously injured by the tornado with one loss of life.  Others who were less seriously injured still face ongoing trauma and the expense of replacing lost and damaged personal belongings, artwork, regalia, and vehicles.

The tornado that tore through Caddo Mounds State Historic Site on April 13th during Caddo Culture Day forever changed the 70 lives of our extended family of the Caddo, Potawatomi, Alabama-Coushatta Nations and other locals of east Texas who were gathered together in celebration and ceremony.

Countless people, including many from the Caddo Nation, have collaborated to develop an award-winning museum and interpretive center, build a traditional grass house (as featured in this PBS documentary) and heritage garden, showcase traditional and contemporary Caddo art, provide community workshops, and most importantly, support an increasingly connected community.

With this strong background of caring, generosity and grit, we have full faith that we will rebuild this important Texas cultural legacy.  But to do so, we must first support and embrace the people injured and impacted by the tornado at Caddo Mounds.

Thank you for any donation you can give today!

Support by sharing!

We urge you to share this fundraising effort with your friends and professional networks, especially with those who appreciate the importance of preserving cultural heritage sites and celebrating contemporary indigenous cultures.  We aim to alleviate much of the financial burden so our guests and volunteers can focus on their recovery. Please give deep and share widely. Let’s do this.

Who are we?

The Friends of Caddo Mounds, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group whose members have volunteered with the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site for as many as eight years.  All donations are tax-deductible.

The East Texas Cultural Alliance was founded in 2016 through a partnership with Caddo Mounds SHS, Nacogdoches Historic Sites, Nacogdoches Public Library, the Forestry Museum, the Stone Fort Museum, the SFA Gardens education program, and the Texas Forest Trail Region. The organization provides collaborative support to volunteers and cultural professionals working in museums, historic sites, libraries, and parks across East Texas.

How will money be allocated?

A collaborative council will allocate 100% of donations to the needs of survivors from the tornado at Caddo Mounds.  A needs assessment will be shared with those in attendance of Caddo Culture Day on April 13th, 2019.  After a more complete picture of expenses is obtained, the council will review needs and the Friends of Caddo Mounds, Inc. will distribute funds according to impact level and need.
