Support a Shelter for the Holidays

From Deesha Dyer

2020 has been a heck of a ride. Let's use this holiday season to remember no matter how trying 2020 has been for us, we have lots to be thankful for and we can all pitch in to help the families of Carpenter's Shelter.

Hello Friends and Family,

2020 has been a heck of a ride.

With the holiday season of giving and thanks upon us, we wanted to use this time to remember that, no matter how trying 2020 has been, we have lots to be grateful and thankful for. We also know this year has been particularly difficult for our most vulnerable neighbors.  We know those who were on the edge of survival at the start of 2020 need our help even more now.

This year, we are supporting Carpenter’s Shelter in Alexandria, VA.

https://carpentersshelter.org/

I regularly volunteered here when she last lived in DC and has seen the great work of this organization up close and personal.  Last year, they worked with nearly 800 homeless and formerly homeless children and adults. Yes - CHILDREN and adults. Their main priority is to secure more permanent housing outside the shelter.  With hard work, the average stay in the shelter is just 3 months - a testament to the housing, mental and physical health, employment, and other services they provide.

We’re working with them to purchase items their residents needs as part of their stay in the shelter and as they transition to housing outside the shelter. When we asked what they needed most, here is what they recommended:

  • Deodorant (men and women’s)

  • Shampoo and Conditioner

  • Body Wash

  • Shower shoes (M/L/XL)

  • Q-Tips

  • Washcloths

  • Large Towels

  • Earphones (yes, earphones! Many clients want to listen to things on their phones (go figure!!) and need replacements often)

Hook & Fasten will match the first $1,500 in donations.  $3,000 will buy supplies for at least 50 individuals.
