What is Summer Learning Loss?

Income can often determine how enriching a child's summer will be. For some kids, summer is one of the hardest times of the year because they are not receiving support from their school. Kids in higher income brackets tend to have summers full of enriching experiences like trips to the lake, summer camps, or days at the library. For low income kids, food scarcity and education loss are common. The danger is when this learning loss accumulates over many years leaving low income kids unable to catch up academically to their peers. R Empowerment and RMSEL are partnering to give kids an opportunity to learn during the summer. The fundraising, creation of all the experiments, and the assembly of the kits will be run by high school students at RMSEL. R Empowerment is mentoring the students to create this campaign and will help with the dispersal of the kits to kids across the country as well as locally in Denver.
