Update #9

Thank you, everyone!

This fundraiser ends in 14 days based on the arbitrary date I set back in August, and I'm going to let expire. I can't thank all of you enough for your help, and for helping me keep Sugar healthy and comfortable for as long as I was able. This really blew all of my expectations out of the water, and I'm floored by how much support you all offered.

As thanks, here's a picture from the time she met an ostrich.

More Info

Meet Sugar: She’s a four-pound chihuahua with a heart murmur who needs your help.

Sugar was rescued by Dan and Lindsey in early 2017, and is somewhere between 5 and 10 years old. When she was adopted, it was clear that Sugar had special medical needs – but in the last year, her health challenges have been getting worse. In early 2020, her heart condition progressed, and treatments became more aggressive.

X-rays show that Sugar has an enlarged heart that takes up the height of her chest. Along with the murmur, her condition sometimes results in wheezing, a severe cough that sometimes keeps her awake throughout the night, ongoing vet visits, bloodwork, and lots of daily medication.

As we've recently learned, Sugar's heart medications take a serious toll on her kidneys, and finding the right balance between the two has meant a lot of time at the vet, sometimes in urgent care.

This month alone, Sugar has been rushed to the emergency vet multiple times. At the time of writing, she's in an oxygen chamber for the second night in a row. Due to COVID-19 regulations, Dan is only able to see her for a few minutes each day and pet her through a window with a gloved hand.

In the last two weeks alone, medical bills for visits, hospitalization, and treatments have already passed $11,000.

Sugar's hobbies include licking nostrils, building dens out of blankets, and eating carrots 10 times her size. She'd really like to get back to doing that and seeing her family again.

As you can imagine, this care has all become extremely expensive, and incredibly financially overwhelming. Each overnight stay at the vet alone is another couple thousand dollars. Any amount you might be able to spare will go directly toward Sugar's care and get her back home with her family sooner. We can't thank you enough.

Update #8

Hello everyone. Once again, I feel compelled to be totally transparent about my own finances.

I just did the math and arrived at the new total for all of the bills I've paid since Sugar's first urgent care hospitalization toward the beginning of August. It's not a pleasant trip down memory lane, but I want to be totally upfront about what I've paid so I can justify asking for money from friends, family, and strangers. With every vet trip, every medication, and every other expense included, my grand total is $16,499.03.

That, unfortunately, is a huge chunk of what I take home in a year. And while this won't put me out on the street or anything like that, it's not easy to pay off.

I won't be changing this fundraiser's goal or anything like that, and I know that so many people have already been incredibly generous. But if some of you could share the link around to hopefully get more eyeballs on this fundraiser, that would really be a huge help.

And, of course, thank you thank you thank you again to everyone who chipped in. This little bit of math homework wasn't very fun, but I've also been thinking about a lot of happy memories and every day that all of you helped me take care of Sugar was truly a gift.

Update #7

Hi everyone,

Sad news today. On Friday evening, Sugar took a sudden turn. After a day of hospitals and meeting with vet cardiologists, we unfortunately had to say goodbye on Saturday afternoon.

We're all still shocked -- she had made such a great recovery last week.

Sugar really gave it her all through this whole ordeal. And while we're heartbroken, putting her to sleep was the only thing that would have been fair and compassionate to Sugar.

I'm really sorry to everyone who's finding out through this update, but it's difficult to have the same one-on-one conversation with everyone who deserved something more personal.

Anyway, thank you again to everyone who donated to or shared this fundraiser for helping to keep us and Sugar going through all of this. I'll update again once all the new bills come in. But, for now, thank you.

Update #6

Great news! We had our followup appointment today, and Sugar seems to have made an incredible recovery. Her cardiologist described her chest x-rays as "beyond beautiful," and her kidneys are in the best shape they've been since this whole ordeal began.

Unfortunately, that's another $720 bill for me, but unless something happens, they don't think they'll need to see her again for at least a month. Thank you, again, to everyone who's donated or shared the fundraiser, for helping me get Sugar the care she needs and deserves!

This is an old picture from just months after I adopted Sugar (I'm letting her rest from the vet stress) but it's one of my favorites.

Update #5

Since we got back, Sugar has been doing a little bit better every day. She's been spending most of her time napping. But that's also completely normal for her, sick or healthy! I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you, again, to everyone who's donated or shared this fundraiser.

Update #4

Sorry for the double update -- here's hoping the image ends up working this time.

Update #3

It's important to me that I be as transparent about finances as possible if I'm going to ask for money. Here's my credit card statement for Sugar's bills, going back to her first of two hospitalizations earlier this month. These bills show her two hospitalizations in the form of daily vet fees, as well as smaller charges for pharmacy orders from both Blue Pearl and Best Pet RX.

Also, since I can't delete updates once they post, I'm hoping and praying that rotating the image in advance means this one ends up looking right.

Okay, the images are definitely just messing with me at this point.

Update #2

Look who I got to take home today! Sugar still isn't 100 percent better, but she's doing a LOT better, and we reached the point where it would be better for me to care for her at home than to leave her at the hospital. Thankfully, that means the bills are going to stop piling up for now.

Also, thank you again to everyone who donated! I'm trying to thank everyone individually, but in case I don't get to it or miss someone as I keep track, please don't feel overlooked -- I see you, and I'm beyond moved by your help.

I promise I know how to use a computer, I don't know why these pictures keep rotating.

Update #1

Thank you so much to everyone who's already donated! I had very low expectations for this, and every dollar is such a gamechanger for us right now.

I haven't been able to visit Sugar yet today. But here she is on Monday, being a little goblin in her oxygen-enriched cage at the vet, featuring a bright-pink sign in comic sans.
