More Info

On April 15, 2023 the Sudanese diaspore awoke with horror to the news of rival military factions engaging in open armed conflict in the streets of the country's largest cities. The fighting, which erupted in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan, came at the heels of a military coup which displaced the transitional government put in place after the 2019 Sudanese Revolution. The revolution had captured the eyes of the globe as a civilian coalition of students, doctors, and women activists displaced a decades-long dictatorship. The current war can be understood as an effort to fill that power vacuum, propped by years of foreign intervention.

While soldiers fight brutally to take control of the country, ordinary Sudanese civilians have been left destitute. More than 10M individuals have been forcibly displaced. These are ordinary people whose lives have been overturned, whose homes have been looted, and who now face a daily struggle to gather the barest of necessities. Many have been displaced multiple times as the fighting has spread throughout the country. Indeed the vast majority are refugees in their own country as only 2M have found asylum in neighboring countries like Egypt or Chad. Even those who are able to escape the fighting face harsh conditions in refugee camps riddled with scarce resources and ethnic violence.

It is incredibly costly to be a refugee. Those making the pilgramage from city to city face checkpoints manned by military thugs, incredibly high prices for basic necessities, and relentless terrain as Sudan enters a rainy season known for intense flooding. Many do not make it out alive.

Despite these struggles, a slew of civil socity volunteer organization have sprouted with the goal of alleviating the needs of those worst impacted. This fundraiser will directly support two of them

  • Save AlGineina Initiative: Sudanese-led volunteer initiative operating only health clinic at Adre refugee camp in Eastern Chad
  • Barana Hanabneiho: Youth NGO created after 2019 revolution working with local volunteers to provide direct mutual aid across Sudan

Additionally, we will also be providing direct aid to a family of 6 children, aged 2-17, who lost both of their parents and are now living with their aunt.
