Spruce Men's Hair- mobile salon

Spruce Men's Hair- mobile salon

From Missy Gladden

I am starting a single station men's mobile salon. I will be focused on first responders, corporations, and medical campuses. My goal is to give convenience to men who are often too busy to get to a shop for a cut.

Update #5

Thank you to everyone who contributed to my fundly campaign and/or has shown support!!!

I came up not as close to my goal as I had hoped, but I know these times are hard. Every bit counts and I will continue towards my mission of being operational by Sept 1st.

My next step is securing some locations to start a few weeks from now. My model will work similar to a food truck, but with set appointments. Looking to start with fire houses, senior living, and luxury apartments. Areas that would work best are Columbus, Gahanna, and possibly Marysville.

If you know of a spot that would welcome me for a 2-3 hours 1-4 times/month, I would love the connection!

***UPDATE: With careful planning I have been able to cut my budget needs in half! So now only attempting to raise a total of $10,000. That means ai am a quarter of the way there. I still have a ways to go, and at least $4,000 to become operational.

It has been a long time dream of mine to one day own a mobile salon. This last year has been full of risk, failure, and refinement of that dream. With the Covid-19 pandemic, I found myself struck with doubt that I could even start this new venture. A week into returning to my old salon job I knew it was less sustainable in this world crisis than something solo. I knew it was not the wrong time, but exactly the right time to execute the plan I have been working on the past year.

I have purchased a 2019 Ford Transit 250 high roof van. I plan to transform it into a single station mobile salon. By limiting my business to just myself I am able to have greater control over the sanitation standards now required, creating a safe environment for my guests, as well as, a healthy working area for me. My mobile salon will be clean, convenient, and comfortable. I will focus solely on men's hair, because that is what I am gifted to do.

I am looking for monetary support to help build this dream. Your contribution will be used to upfit my van with necessary insulation, venting, air, electric, water, lighting, and insurance. Additional money given out of your generosity will be used to add finishings and a top of the line styling chair.

I have some of the most unbelievable clients whom I will work to stay convenient to first and foremost. That group of individuals aside, I plan to focus my business on the first responders, by going to fire houses and medical campuses. I will also expand my business to any place you may find a food truck(apartment or housing communities, office buildings, senior living, dealerships, etc). I will be looking to line up about 7 locations to be at for approximately 2-3 hrs/week. Depending on each locations needs, I may be there once or twice monthly or every week.

At the start, I will not have a shampoo bowl, but will be sure to keep each guest as hair free as possible using a hot towel to gather loose hairs. I will also include a hot neck shave and styling with every service. I will be providing only haircuts at this point for the sake of time consistency.

Say you really want to help out, but do not have the financial means(I get it 2020 has broken many of us); consider offering your time or expertise. This will be mainly a DIY project, so if you are local to Columbus and know a thing or two about van conversion or it's many elements, I would love to hear from you!!

I thank all of you that have been cheering me on as I have been working towards this dream. I thank all who will support me along the way. I value each and everyone of you!!

Update #3

Some updates for everyone:
I had a lot of the electric elements taken care of by a professional company a couple of weeks ago. Wishing I had them do more now that I am working on drilling in studs. I guess that is what makes it a labor of love.
I have done some precuts for the floor insulation and have created my station. Once the walls and floors are in all the furnishings “should” be a quick process.

Update #2

Thanks to my folks for being my personal logistics center, aka the place where all of my giant packages go!

I have scheduled a time In beginning of July to take my van in to get installation of lights, shore line, battery and box, vent, air conditioner and heat. Waiting on a delivery of floor insulation and will hopefully begin those this week!

Only $4000 more to go to become operational!!!
