Since joining the National Ballet of Canada as an apprentice in 2009, I've endured the inevitable ups and downs that have come with a profession in dance and countless hours of sweat and yes, tears. Recently being promoted to Principal Dancer was indeed an unforgettable and pivotal moment in my life. I feel utterly grateful for every opportunity I've had thus far. Not to mention all of the incredible people who have graciously shared with me the tools and advice necessary to take on this demanding profession. I've embraced every second of this journey with an open mind and heart. A professional ballet career doesn't last forever. The real work for me begins now.
Dancers today have a limited number of opportunities to work with other dancers with different artistic sensibilities as they once did because of the expense it takes to collaborate. My most heartfelt wish for the SCDC dancers is that they will have the chance to share their artistic knowledge and depth of experience with one another. It’s essential that we continue passing our experiences to (and with) one another. It’s how the art form and its dancers have persevered for generations.
During our summer offseason, an idea emerged within me to create the opportunity for our dancers to thrive on stage in ways they may not have had the chance to. It was a seed of an idea that has now grown into a beautiful collaboration. The Skylar Campbell Dance Collective aims to provide a platform for dancers to have more performing opportunities. I am uniting colleagues of mine from every rank within The National Ballet of Canada, as well as inviting world-renowned talent from the New York City Ballet and Boston Ballet. It is thrilling to have ballerinas of such prowess, including Greta Hodgkinson, Lauren Lovette, and Sterling Hyltin, also joining the collective.
By presenting a curated selection of repertoire, SCDC is setting out to revive classical and contemporary works that put a spotlight on this ever-evolving and moving art form. Honoring these innovative works will help drive this art form into the future by invigorating new audiences.
I'm so excited to bring this innovative endeavor to life. I envision SCDC reaching even more audiences by performing this specially curated repertoire at dance festivals and in theaters across Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Focusing on the local community is incredibly important to me. It was one of the first things I aspired to implement when founding the collective. SCDC will make a conscious effort to reach out and involve local schools, by sharing our love of dance with the members of each community we visit.
Art and dance serve to enrich the physical, economic, social, and cultural elements within a community. Advancing ballet performances like these will only continue to fuel the curiosity in an avid dance goer and spark the interest of that passerby, who has never attended a ballet performance and is merely endeavoring on something a little different
