On the evening of October 2, 2022, our worst fears became reality. Our daughter, granddaughter, niece, and beloved sister, Sierra Jensen, barely 20 years old, was returning home from a duck hunting trip with her boyfriend and his brother when they were struck by a driver who was under the influence, at over 120 MPH. She was ejected from the vehicle and thrown over 100 feet. She is suffering from severe life-threatening injuries and had to be transported to a Neurological/Trauma Intensive Care Unit located 2 hours from her home. She had exploratory surgery where they found her spleen had been damaged beyond repair and her liver torn. She has received blood transfusions, additional blood product, multiple CT scans, and countless other exams/testing. Her right arm is shattered, teeth damaged, and had her head shaved in spots for a bolt and a drain for her brain. Her worst injury is to her brain. She is currently in a self-induced coma and at this point the future is unknown. We have been told that the hardest part is that we must simply wait. Hour by hour, hoping for any updates. Medical professionals expect as much as weeks, but likely it could be months of a hospital stay, as well as an unknown amount of recovery to follow. There are many expenses already accrued by family and friends that include that of travel arrangements, towing of vehicles, lost wages, and more. The expected costs are unknown even prior to whatever amount that may be needed for medical costs, and prolonged recovery and care needs for Sierra. The family is asking for any level of support that may help ease this unexpected trauma to our beloved Sierra.
