Quick update: the procedure went well today and Ashly is into recovery. The doctors said she looks good and is strong enough to have surgery. Now we are waiting to hear when they will operate. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and support,

More Info

My name is Brett and I've spent much of the last two winters living in Bocas del Toro, Panama. During my time there I've become very close with a local family on a remote island called Bastimentos.

Lito and his wife, Tania have treated me like family and been sure to keep me safe (and fed!) while across the Caribbean from my home. In our time together I've also gotten to know their two beautiful children, a 4 year old boy named Kabriel and a 10 month old girl named Ashly Shaduana.

Originally thought to be fully healthy, Ashly was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a heart defect that is present at birth. More specifically, Ashly has a valve between her heart and lungs that is too narrow (pulmonary stenosis or PS).Fortunately, TOF is operable here in Panama and there is even a foundation specifically meant for kids with TOF, which covers part of the operation. For the rest we need your help.

Despite surgery still being some time off, the Gomez family is constantly having to travel to David (two boat rides then a several hour bus trip) for blood work, doctor consult and to receive her medicine. (in person, courier isn't 100% there) With costs rising and income limited by travel, they need help.

The money raised will be used for the following: the operation, blood tests, Echocardiograms, medicine, transportation from the island to the city (costly flight), doctor check ups in David, hotel expenses and any related miscellaneous expenses.

I don't ask for help very often but this family truly needs it. A gift of time and money that may barely affect your life could change this little girl's. Thank you.

Update #3

Today is a big day for little Shaduana. As I type this she is being prepared for her catheter procedure. During this procedure, the doctors will insert a tiny camera into Ashly to visually inspect the affected area(s) of the heart and determine a final treatment.

Obviously, this is a significant step and not without risk. Please keep her in your thoughts/prayers this morning. And if you can help in any way, the family really needs it. We've already been a huge help but those dollars raised have been spent on travel to and from the city, lodging in the city and testing and we have a ways to go.

The picture attached was taken in the hospital yesterday as Ashly spent some time with her father, Lito. Thank you all for your support,

Brett

Update #2

Hello to all and sorry for the long delay between posts. There has not been a lot to share recently as it has been the typical tests and headaches of dealing with obtaining good medicine on a remote island.

We should finally know more about the medical plan very soon. Ashly headed to Panama City over the weekend to undergo a catheter procedure this week. They will be sending a camera in to visually inspect the affected areas and determine the best process for fixing. Hopefully this means we will know the final course of action in the coming week(s).

On a separate note, I spent 20 minutes on FaceTime with Ashly (half of it with her holding the phone hostage and blowing me kisses...the cutest) and her family this past weekend. They are all in great spirits and she looks beautiful. She is growing fast and you wouldn't know by her looks or spunk that she is anything but perfect.

I will keep the updates coming as there is information to share. The road ahead is still long but as a community we will overcome it. Thank you again for all of your support of little Ashly, we are forever greatful!!!

With Love,
Brett on behalf of the Gomez family

Update #1

Guess who turned 1 today! All the travel, doctors visits and tests can't hide the beauty and joy in this little angel. Thank you to everyone who has supported thus far. More news should be coming soon as they are currently in Panama City for more tests and consults. The little gifts have added up to a positive impact for this little girl and her family but there is still a long road ahead.

Most importantly, Happy Happy Birthday Shaduana!!!
