Sewing Machines for Sambhali

Sewing Machines for Sambhali

From Lola Wallace

I'm raising money to buy sewing machines for the women and girls of the Sambhali Trust. The cost of a sewing machine is about $70. Support my campaign and let's help empower the women and girls of the Sambhali Trust.

The word Sambhali means "rising of the deprived woman."

In many parts of India, women are still treated as second class citizens. Their role is often pre determined as "Wife" and as such, young women are given little access to schooling. Thoughts of further education, starting a business or having a career become just distant dreams. Widows are shunned in their communities and considered outcasts with no skills to support themselves or their children.

The aim of the trust is to set up and support modest centers, where  women and girls can be taught sewing, whilst learning English and Math. This gives them the opportunity to earn money and start their own small business. This is meaningful empowerment in a society where the literacy rate for women is extremely low.

I visited Rajasthan in India and saw how powerful the simple sewing machine is for these women and girls. Through learning comes self esteem and confidence. I hope to contribute to this organization by sharing the story of the Sambhali Trust to raise funds for more sewing machines and help create more independant and powerful women and girls in India.
